Washington Falls to No. 1 Wake Forest, 4-0
February 16, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – In the opening round of the 2018 ITA National Team Indoor Championship, Washington men's tennis fell to No. 1 Wake Forest, 4-0, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Friday night.
"I know we can play better than that," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "A big part of why we lost was the good play of Wake Forest. They hit the ball well and put us in uncomfortable positions. But in this tournament, you have to be ready to show up. We have an opportunity again tomorrow."
The loss snapped a five-game win streak for the Huskies (6-2). Meanwhile, the Demon Deacons remain undefeated, improving to 6-0 on the year.
The No. 1 doubles pair of Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer played a strong match against the Demon Deacons' top pair. The Huskies came out on top, 6-4, after holding serve for the final game. Sommer's tough serve on set point forced the opponent to return the ball long, giving the Dawgs the win.
"They gave us a shot at the doubles point," Anger said. "I'm happy with the sets we can get and that gave us a chance. Unfortunately, we fell short on the other courts."
No. 2 and 3 doubles for the Huskies struggled. Jack Davis and Jake Douglas kept it close for most of the set until Wake Forest pulled away to win, 6-4. Piers Foley and Mitch Stewart fell 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Washington battled hard in singles, but the results once again went in favor of top-ranked Wake Forest. Most courts kept it close early in the first sets, but the Demon Deacons pulled away. All of Wake Forest's singles lineup was ranked aside from the No. 6 spot.
Sommer, Foley and Sebastian Hawken all were within two games in their opening sets. In the second set, No. 4, 5 and 6 all lost their matches, which clinched the win for Wake Forest, stopping the other three matches.
Washington will play No. 9 Oklahoma State on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. PT in the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Live scoring and streaming can be found on the GoHuskies.com ITA web page.
