Huskies 11th at Arizona Intercollegiate As Second Round Suspended Due to Darkness
January 29, 2018 | Men's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. --- The University of Washington men's golf team opened up the spring portion of its 2017-18 season with a solid showing, sitting in 12th place in the 18 team field as play was suspended in the second round of the Arizona Intercollegiate. The Huskies are just seven shots out of eighth place amid high scores at the par 71, 7,292 yard Sewailo Golf Club on Monday.
Washington was in 11th place after the first round of competition, posting a 32-over 316. Scores were high all around with Baylor holding the early team lead at 19-over. The Huskies are 11-over par late in the second round and sit at 12th place, two shots behind BYU and three behind San Diego State.
"It was a tough day with very strong winds and greens being quite fast," said Head Coach Alan Murray. "We didn't play our best this morning and had too many big numbers which cost us. The guys have responded better in round two and we have gained a little momentum heading into the final round I hope. It is a really good golf course and lots of crosswinds really test your ability to control your ball flight and your short game also because you will have to scramble in these conditions. Frank is our low man at the moment but it's pretty bunched . We just need to dig deep tomorrow and try be as clinical as possible to climb as many spots on the leaderboard as we can."
Senior Frank Garber led the Huskies through the first round from the No. 5 spot. Garber carded a 4-over 75 to finish tied for eighth place after 18 holes. He started the day with a birdie on the first hole and after a rough stretch on the back nine, finished with birdies on two of the final four holes. Garber again birdied the first hole (hole No. 12) to open the second round but gave two strokes back two holes later. Before the darkness ended the round, Garber would bogey three of the final four holes to finish and was at 4-over through 14 holes.
Junior Carl Yuan opened the tournament slow, posting a 7-over 78 in the first round. He continued to struggle early in the second round, going 5-over through the front nine. But things changed on the back nine as Yuan dropped two strokes through the first six holes and was at 3-over through 15 holes when play was suspended. He is currently tied for 32nd overall.
In that tie with Yuan is freshman Noah Woolsey, who finished round one at six-over 77 and is at 4-over through 15 holes in round two. Woolsey was at one under through the first six holes of the second round before a tough two-hole stretch saw him pick up five strokes. The freshman was even through the first six holes of the back nine before play was suspended.
Sophomore Henry Lee really struggled through the opening round but was playing well in the second round when darkness fell. Lee recorded three-straight birdies on holes 11-13 and was just one shot over par in the second round with four holes to go. His first round was tough as the sophomore ended the round with a quadruple bogey to finish at 15-over 86. However, after bogeys on four of the first nine holes in the second round, he caught fire as play ended and is tied for 78th overall at 16-over-par.
Freshman Jan Schneider matched Lee's first round score with a tough 15-over 86, picking up 11 strokes over a five-hole stretch. But he carded seven pars over the final 10 holes of the first round and was just three-over par with a pair of birdies through 14 holes in the abbreviated second round.
Three other Huskies were participating nearby in the individual competition at the Randolph Golf Course, a 6,902 yard, Par 72. Both rounds were completed in the individual competition.
Newcomer William Mansfield, who joined the team in October, started strong with a 1-over-par 73 in the first round of competition. Mansfield was at 4-over midway through the round after a double bogey on seven, but birdied three of the final six holes. However, the junior was not able to keep up the momentum and posted a 7-over 79 during the second round and is tied for 15th at 8-over 152.
Sophomore Shamu Bodhidatta was tied for 20th at 10-over 154 (75-79) while senior Jordan Lu was 43rd at 22-over 166 (85-81).
The Huskies wrap up the Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday with the second round of the team competition completing at 8:00 a.m. That will be followed immediately by the final round.
