January 30, 2018 | Men's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. --- Carl Yuan posted a final round 67 to pace the Washington men's golf team to a 3-over-par final round on Tuesday as the Huskies finished 12th at the Arizona Intercollegiate. The first tournament of the spring season was held at the par-71 Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson on Monday and Tuesday.
Washington posted a final round 288 to finish in 12th place overall at 50-over-par 902 (316-298-288). The Huskies shot progressively lower after a rough first round, dropping 18 strokes during the second round and another 10 over the final round. Washington also recorded three eagles on the final day, matching the most Eagles over the course of the tournament.
Yuan rebounded from a tough first day to post a 4-under-par 67 and finish tied for 25th with a 9-over-par 222 (78-77-67). Yuan opened the round with a bogey but would get birdies on three of the next six holes to drop to 2-under. As he made the turn, Yuan picked up an eagle on 10 then another birdie on 11. He would card a bogey on 13 but finished with five pars to end at 4-under.
Noah Woolsey also played much better on the second day of the tournament. The freshman opened the day by carding an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole as he closed out the second round which had been suspended due to darkness. He kept that momentum going in the next round, posting a final-round 71 to end in a tied for 28th at 10-over 223 (77-75-71). Woolsey, who entered the final round at 10-over-par, capped the round with back-to-back birdies on the final two holes to finish even for the day.
Jan Schneider also posted an even-par 71 over his final round, impressive especially after a rough start to the day. Schneider had two double-bogeys on the first six holes of the day and was at five-over heading into the eighth hole. But he recovered well, picking up birdies on eight, 13 and 17 and had one of Washington's three eagles on the day with a three on the par-five on his 15th hole. Overall, Schneider fired a 19-over par 232 (86-75-71), which saw him finish in a tie for 64th.
Frank Garber finished the day at 8-over par to place tied for 60th with an 18-over 231 (75-77-79). Garber opened the round with two birdies to one bogey through the first five holes, but a triple bogey on his seventh hole pushed him to three-over.
Henry Lee carded a final-round 79 and finished at 23-over 236 (86-71-79). Lee struggled midway through the round and sat at seven-over through 14 holes. But he would birdie 15 and 16 before picking up three strokes over the final two holes.
In the individual competition held at the Par-72 Randolph Golf Course, Shamu Bodhidatta posted his best round of the season, carding a final-round 71 to finish tied for 17th with a 9-over 225 (75-79-71). Bodhidatta had five birdies on the round including going back-to-back on the 11th and 12th holes of his round.
Junior William Mansfield wrapped up his final round with a 76 to finish tied for 26th at 12-over-par 228 (73-79-76). Senior Jordan Lu dropped back in the 70s with a final-round 77, to finish in a tie for 41st place at 27-over 243 (85-81-77).
The Huskies take some time off before returning to action in three weeks at The Prestige, co-hosted by Stanford and UC Davis at the Palm Springs PGA West course Feb. 17-19.
