SEATTLE – The indoor track season ramps up in a big way with the UW Invitational in the Dempsey this Friday and Saturday. Many Huskies got a starting point in place two weeks ago and now look to improve upon it, while others are making season debuts this week or jumping to a new event. A heavily west-coast field with six Pac-12 squads in attendance, plus a number of elite pros and American Olympic medal-winners will make for another memorable weekend.
Friday's schedule consists of the first multi-event competitions of the season over the first several hours. At 4 p.m. the running events begin and will feature heat one of the 3,000-meters, all 200-meter and 5,000-meter heats, and the first distance medley relays of the season. Field events Friday will include the first flights of the pole vault and the women's weight throw.
Saturday gets going at 9 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdles qualifying and action will run all day until approximately 6 p.m. The sprint finals should begin at 12:30 p.m., while the top two heats for each running event of 400-meters or longer will start at 3:15 p.m. with the top heats of the miles.
UW Women
The Husky sprinters had a solid start a week ago, highlighted by freshman Iman Brown's No. 2 200-meter time in the UW recordbooks. Brown will be entered in the 200-meters again this week along with Imani Apostol, Sarah Stavig, and freshman Olivia Ribera. Ribera, Stavig, and freshman Jelani Heath are also slated to run the 60-meters.
Eight Dawgs are entered in the 400-meters this Saturday, with junior transfer Raquel Tjernagel in the first of the invitational heats. Apostol, Carolyn Birkenfeld, Darhian Mills, Carly Lester, Hannah Tarleton, Morganne Hill, and Chisom Eke will all run in the earlier heats. Mills and Hill are also entered in the 60-meter hurdles. 2017 Bowerman Award winner Raevyn Rogers is slated to run in the top 400-meter heat as well as former Husky All-American Gianna Woodruff.
In the women's distance events, the DMR will be a key event if the Dawgs put their 'A' team out which is scheduled to feature Anna Maxwell, Tjernagel, Hannah Derby, and Amy-Eloise Neale. Neale and Derby are also entered in the 800-meters on Saturday while Maxwell is in the top heat of the women's mile.
Two-time World Championships bronze medalist Sifan Hassan leads the women's mile field featuring Maxwell as well as senior Maddie Meyers. Junior Emily Hamlin is in the second-fastest heat along with freshman Allie Schadler. Multiple Husky freshmen will go in the mile and the 800-meters as well.
Senior transfer Madeline Westerhoff is the only Dawg entered in the 5,000-meters this week.
No Huskies will run the 3k, but it will still be one to watch, as U.S. Olympic medalist and NYC Marathon Champ Shalane Flanagan returns for the second meet in a row for another tune-up.
In the jumps, three Huskies are aiming high in the high jump: Mayson Douglass, Gabriela Aquilini, and Iman Brown. Tori Franzen, Annika Dayton, and Makenna Barton lead a big women's vault group. Jelani Heath will long jump, looking to build off her impressive 19-4 season opener two weeks ago.
In the throws, Gina Flint, Angel Nkwonta, and Ginny Mehl are lined up for the shot put, with Nkwonta and Mehl in the weight throw as well, along with senior Katie Wardsworth.
In the first women's pentathlon of the season, freshman Hannah Rusnak, sophomore Elinor Jones Toutant, and senior Ericka Budinich will navigate through the five events.
UW Men
In the men's sprints, sophomore Khalil Winfrey skips through to the 60-meter dash prelims this week after his 6.78 PR at the Indoor Preview. Senior Jordan Lucas plus freshmen Evan Mafilas, Kemuel Santana, and Kevin Liu will also run the 60m. Lucas, Liu, and Winfrey will all run the 200-meters as will Christian Young, while Mafilas is set to go in the 400-meters along with Jason Palmer, and in the fastest section, senior Michael Thomas and junior Ryan Croson, who both had 200-meter PRs two weeks ago.
Senior Eric Simpson will look to put a PR together in the 60m hurdles, coming in in the preliminary round.
In the mid-distances, freshman Devan Kirk will toe the line for his first 800-meters in college in the first invitational section.
Senior Colby Gilbert, one of six sub-four-minute milers in school history, will look to break that mark for a third time in his career in the top mile section. Senior Andrew Gardner, freshman Talon Hull, junior Fred Huxham, and redshirt freshmen Nate Beamer and David Strome will also run the mile.
In the 3k, Charlie Barringer, Nick Laccinole, Gavin Parpart, and Julius Diehr will all be in the third heat. The 5k won't feature any Huskies, but U.S. Olympic medalist Galen Rupp will return to the Dempsey to lead the field Friday night.
In the field events, seven Dawgs in all will be in the top men's pole vault flight, led by junior Chase Smith who opened his season with a 17-7 clearance two weeks ago. Freshman Jaylen Taylor will go for the Dawgs in both the long and triple jumps.
A very deep men's shot put field will include junior Jack Lembcke coming off a PR of 59-10 ¼ that moved him to No. 7 in school history, as well as sophomore Jose Padilla and freshman Jonah Wilson. Redshirt freshman Connor Jost will throw the weight as well.
