Huskies Drop 4-3 Battle With No. 17 Michigan
January 20, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Washington men's tennis started strong against 17th-ranked Michigan and also put two singles wins on the board at the end but four straight singles wins in the heart of the match gave the Wolverines a 4-3 victory at the Nordstrom Tennis Center tonight. Senior Jake Douglas ended things on a positive with a dramatic upset of the 20th-ranked player in the country, while freshman Jack Davis also had wins in both singles and doubles tonight.
"They're a very solid team and that's why I was excited about the match," said Head Coach Matt Anger. "It was a good opportunity. I knew Michigan would play hard and same for us. I don't think we have anything to feel bad about, but we want more. It's only the second match of the year but already no one likes to lose and we think we can get more, so that's our job to get better and get it."
Douglas took on Michigan senior Runhao Hua at the No. 2 singles spot. Hua won the first set, 6-2, and was closing in on the second, up 4-1. But Douglas had a three game run of hold-break-hold to make it 4-4 and he eventually got into a tiebreaker. Douglas won the final three points of the breaker for a 7-5 win to force a third. The third set saw the Husky jump out to the 4-1 lead with Hua then rallying for 4-4, but Douglas held serve and then on a deciding deuce point in the next game he ended a long point with a crosscourt backhand that Hua couldn't get over the net, finishing a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 win.
"Hua is tough, I've seen him before, he strikes the ball well. He won their Regional event and for good reason. So that was a very good job by Jake to turn that around," Anger said.
The Huskies took the early advantage by claiming a tightly-contested doubles point. At the No. 2 spot, Jack Davis and Jake Douglas were serving up 5-4 but faced a break point. They saved it and then won the next deciding point to get the 6-4 win over Kristofer and Mattias Siimar. At third doubles, Piers Foley and Mitch Stewart took a 5-2 lead over Michigan's Brown/Johnston, but the Wolverines got one break back to make it 5-4. But Foley and Stewart made their next service game count, holding to win, 6-4, and clinch the doubles point. After UW had secured it, Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer lost a tough tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot to the 19th-ranked duo of Alex Knight and Runhao Hua.
The Wolverines seized the momentum in singles with service breaks midway through most of the first sets, going on to win five of the six first sets overall. Washington was much closer in most of the second sets, but only Jake Douglas would get over the hump to force a third.
Washington got its first singles point from freshman Jack Davis, who won an easy first set against Davis Crocker at No. 6 singles by a 6-2 score, then went to a tiebreaker in the second. Davis had a 5-1 lead but Crocker saved four match points until on the fifth, Davis crushed a running forehand winner up the line for the win, 7-6 (9-7).
"Jack's a freshman, so regardless of fall play, the team season is a new start for a freshman," said Anger. "So I think today was great, against a top-20 team, playing against a guy with experience, and to win in straight sets was super. I think he also handled the ups and downs of that second set really well. He also did a great job with Jake in the doubles. They struggled the first two games and then really got it going."
Mitch Stewart fell at No. 1 singles to the ninth-ranked player in the country, Alex Knight, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Michigan's Mattias Siimar stopped junior Enzo Sommer, 6-3, 6-3. It was a 6-4, 6-4 setback at No. 4 singles for junior Piers Foley against Myles Schalet. Sophomore Amit Batta was looking to go the distance at No. 5 singles but Carter Lin broke at 5-5 in the second and closed out a 6-4, 7-5 win.
