Singles Play Leads To Win Over Pacific
January 27, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Despite the slow start after dropping the doubles point, Washington men's tennis won all six singles matches to defeat Pacific, 6-1, in the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Saturday.
"We got the win," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "I like Pacific and their coach. I know they prepare well and they are getting better and better. I expected them to be tough, especially in doubles. I thought that we didn't come out as sharp as we have before. A number of our guys did come out strong, like Mitch (Stewart) and Piers (Foley) in doubles. And most of our guys came out strong in singles."
With the win, Washington improves to 2-1 and Pacific drops to 1-4. The Huskies have never lost to the Tigers in their series history.
At No. 3 doubles, Piers Foley and Mitch Stewart started strong, going up 4-0. The Tigers won a couple of games, but the Huskies put down the hammer, holding serve to win 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Jake Douglas and Jack Davis went back and forth against their Pacific opponents. The set was knotted again at 3-3 before the Tigers won three-straight games to take the 6-3 win.
The doubles point was in the hands of the No. 1 doubles match. Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer fell behind 4-0 early and fought back to win four games in a row to tie it up. However, the No. 34 duo of Bernardo Oliveira and Akram El Sallaly took the 7-5 win to give Pacific the doubles point.
The Huskies took care of business in singles. At No. 1 singles, Douglas swept his opponent, winning 6-0, 6-0.
"I thought our team brought a lot of energy," Douglas said. "I got off to a good start and my opponent lost confidence. I was able to keep the pressure on the whole time to get a good win."
Sommer won his match 6-2, 6-1 on court three not long Douglas finished. Amit Batta won a hard-fought first set, 6-4, on court four. In his second set, he won the first three games, eventually taking the set, 6-2.
Stewart won 6-1 in the first set before his opponent started to battle back in the second. He and Pacific's Adram El Sallaly traded games before Stewart won three-straight games to earn a 6-3 win in the second set, winning the match and clinching the team win for the Huskies.
The freshman Davis was down 3-0 early on court six. He trailed in the first set until tying it at 5-5 and winning two-straight games to take a 7-5 win. The two traded games in the second set until Davis started to pull away. He won the second with a score of 6-3 to take the match.
Foley battled back and forth on court five. He dropped the first set, 6-4, and then fell behind in the second. However, he fought back to tie it up at 5-5. Facing a Pacific match point, Foley evened it up again at 6-6 to force a tiebreaker and win the second set. He then won the third set, 6-2.
Washington will be back in action against another West Coast Conference opponent, Pepperdine. The two will face off on February 2 at 4 p.m. PT in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
