Schroeder Takes Bronze in M2+ At 2017 Worlds
September 29, 2017 | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
SARASOTA, Fla. – Former Husky Finn Schroeder '16 and his German coxed pair earned the bronze medal at the 2017 World Rowing Championships Friday morning. It was the first World Championship for Schroeder, who won national championships in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and freshman eight during his time at the UW.
In the second A final of the regatta, which runs through this weekend, the German crew got out of the starting blocks in first place, but Australia and Great Britain kept up and quickly moved into first and second positions with Germany fourth at 500 meters, narrowly trailing third-place Hungary.
The Aussie crew commanded the race most of the way, stretching its lead over the Brits to more than four seconds at the halfway mark, by which Schroeder's boat had moved back into third, just ahead of the Hungarians. At 1,500, Hungary had moved back into third, by less than two-tenths of a second.
With Australia seemingly clearly in first, the three crews in second through fourth battled back and forth down the stretch. But the Hungarians' out-sprinted the others and they overcame the Aussies for the gold by nearly two seconds. Meanwhile, Schroeder's German boat caught the fading Brits and earned the bronze.
Hungary finished in 6:54.80, with Australia second at 6:56.60 and Germany third in 6:58.37.
Two current Huskies – Ben Davison (USA) and Bram Schwarz (Netherlands) rowed earlier in the A/B semifinals for the men's double sculls. In each of the two semi, the top three finishers would move on to the A final with the remaining three going to the B.
In the first, the Italians took the early lead over Poland with the Dutch in fourth place after the first 500. By the 1,000-meter mark, the Dutch were in fifth place and out of A-final contention. The leaders, along with Norway, continued to fight for the top spots, with Switzerland in fourth trying to get back into it.
At the end, the Poles reached the finish line first, just ahead of Norway and Italy, which had led nearly the entire way. Schwarz and his Dutch partner finished fifth, placing them in the B final.
In the second semifinal, New Zealand, France and Great Britain moved into the three qualifying spots at the start, but all six entries were closely packed as they crossed the 500-meter buoy. By 1,000 meters, the American duo had dropped to sixth place.
France beat the Kiwis to the line for the win and Lithuanian chased down the Brits for the third and final spot while the Americans took sixth.
Schwarz and Davison will both compete in the B final, which will decide places seventh through 12, Sunday at 6:00 a.m.
Also Friday in the men's double sculls, former Husky Conlin McCabe '11 and his Canadian partner rowed in the C final, finishing in fourth place.
Women will take center stage – at least as far as UW competitors are concerned – on Saturday. Daneille Hansen '16 will row in the A final of the leg, truck & arms mixed 4+, an event in which she won a silver medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. Shortly after, veteran Olympian Megan Kalmoe '06 will compete in the women's pair A final. Those races are scheduled for 7:08 a.m. and 7:23 a.m. PT, respectively. Prior to that, two Huskies will compete in the women's four B final: Carmela Pappalardo '20 for Italy and Kirstyn Goodger '14 for New Zealand. That race is scheduled for 6:25 a.m. PT.
