ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of Washington men's golf team finished second among a challenging 17-team field, carding a final round score of 8-over 296 for a final score of 877 (+13, 294-287-296) at the William H. Tucker Invitational on Saturday.
The Huskies were up in contention for the team title through much of the day, until a late run by BYU vaulted the Cougars into first place at 9-over 873. Washington finished four-strokes back at 13-over 877 with Arizona one behind at 878.
"The guys are a little disappointed with the results," said head coach Andy Murray. "We were leading for a long time but finished badly. The conditions were tough but we didn't play as well as we needed down the stretch. However, it was a positive week and the team show positive results overall."
Junior Carl Yuan placed third overall in medalist play with a 4-under 212 (71-73-68). Yuan, who was playing out of the No. 3 spot, entered Saturday at even-par through the first two rounds, but recorded six birdies including four over the final 11 holes to card a 4-under 68 in the final round.Β
"Carl had a great tournament," said Murray. "Finishing at 4-under today in those conditions was fantastic. He is an elite player and showed it this week."
Senior Frank Garber finished tied for 11th with a 3-over 219 (76-69-74). Garber got off to a great start and was at 2-under through 13 holes. However, as the winds picked up down the stretch, Garber struggled a bit but still carded a final round score of 74.
Sophomore Henry Lee posted a final round 78 to finish at 5-over 221 (73-70-78), good enough for 21st place overall.Β
Freshman Noah Woolsey carded a 4-over 76 on the day to give him a two-day total of 9-over 225 (74-75-76) while fellow freshman Jan Schneider finished at 18-over 234 (79-77-78).
Washington returns to the course on Oct. 1-3, competing at the Nike Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of Oregon. The 54-hole tournament takes place at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon.
