
Washington Faces Off Against Tough Field At Nike Collegiate

NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – The University of Washington men's golf team heads down to Oregon for one of its biggest competitions of the season, taking part in the Nike Collegiate Invitational at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course in North Plains, Oregon. The invitational will be contested on the Witch Hallow course, a par 72 which plays at 7,017 yards. The teams will play 18 holes each day beginning at 6:00 a.m. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
THE FIELD (GolfWeek ranking): Washington will compete against some of the best the NCAA has to offer at the Invitational. The 15-team field is comprised of Arizona (22), Clemson (27), Duke (6), Florida (9), Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma (16), Oregon (40), Stanford, Texas (32), Texas Christian (44), USC, Vanderbilt (17), Wake Forest (5) and Washington (42).
THE LINEUP: The Huskies will send junior Carl Yuan, sophomore Henry Lee, senior Frank Garber, freshman Noah Woolsey, and senior Jordan Lu.
COACH'S THOUGHTS: "This is a really strong field and will be a great event to get us to see how we stack up nationally," said head coach Alan Murray. "The guys have been working hard and we are excited to get down there and compete. This will be a week where the guys will learn more and the experience will stand us in good stead regardless of how we play. I am really looking forward to watching the guys compete. They play with big hearts and are a pleasure to be around."
LAST TIME OUT: Washington played its first full tournament of the year, finishing 2nd among 17 teams at the William H. Tucker Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. The Huskies were right up near the top of the standings throughout much of the final day before settling into second with a 13-over 877 (294-287-296). Carl Yuan placed third overall in medalist play with a 4-under 212 (71-73-68) while Frank Garber finished tied for 11th with a 3-over 219 (76-69-74).
LAST SEASON AWARDS: The Huskies had a pair of standouts, including one returner, last season in Corey Pereira and Carl Yuan who both earned PING All-West Region Honors. Yuan was also an All-Pac-12 Second Team honoree and led the team a year ago with 71.57 scoring average. He posted six top 20, two top-10 and one top-five finish during his sophomore campaign and also led the Dawgs at the Pac-12 Championships with a tie for fourth place.
LAST SEASON RESULTS: Under the direction of Alan Murray in his first year with the Huskies, Washington ended the 2016-17 season by appearing in the NCAA Regional, posting a seventh place finish at Aldarra Golf Club in Sammamish, Washington.
NEW STAFF: This summer, Washington welcomed Thomas Sutton as an assistant coach for the Dawgs. Murray came to Seattle having spent the last two seasons in the same role at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Sutton is a former men's golf student-athlete at UAB from 2011-14, competing in 47 events throughout his career. UW head coach Alan Murraycoached Sutton throughout his career in Birmingham.
