October 01, 2017 | Men's Golf
NORTH PLAINS, Ore. --- Despite shooting an impressive 2-under-par 282 on one of the tougher courses in the Northwest, the University of Washington's men's golf team still sits ninth out of 15 teams at the Nike Intercollegiate Invitational at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon.
The Huskies sit in ninth place in the 15-team field which features 12 teams ranked in the top 45 in the latest Golfweek rankings. However, UW is just six strokes out of third place and 10 shots back of the leader. Oklahoma holds the top spot at 12-under with Stanford at 10-under and Vanderbilt at 8-under.
Carl Yuan continued his hot play, recording seven birdies to card a 3-under 68 to sit in a tie for 13th after the first day. Frank Garber overcame a rough couple of holes to finish at 2-under 69.
Henry Lee struggled out of the gate and was 3-over through the front nine, but birdied four of the first six holes on the back nine to finish at even-par 71.
Noah Woolsey finised at 3-over 74 while Jordan Lu rounded out the squad wth a 7-over 78.
"The guys battled well today," said Head Coach Allan Murray. "We had spells of really great golf and dropped a few shots in stretches, too. The guy's attitudes were first class and everyone responded well if they had a bad hole.
"It is a strong field and a good golf course," said Murray. "We are looking forward to getting out there tomorrow. We believe there is a really good team round in this group this week.
Washington starts early on Monday, teeing off at 8:00 a.m. The Huskies are paired with Clemson and Wake Forest in the second of three rounds with the final round on Tuesday.
