
Men's Soccer Downs Portland 1-0 During Road Exhibition Match

PORTLAND, Ore. – The No. 11 University of Washington men's soccer team defeated the Portland Pilots 1-0 on Saturday night during an exhibition match at Merlo Field in Portland, Ore.
Junior forward Kyle Coffee provided the game-winning goal during the first half. The Syracuse, Utah native found the back of the net during the 29th minute to break a scoreless tie and give the Huskies a one-goal edge.
The Huskies outshot the Pilots 12-10 and both teams recorded five shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Saif Kerawala recorded a match-high five saves and needed to make two second-half saves to preserve the shutout.
Sophomore Elijah Rice and freshman James Smith each recorded a match-high three shots, including one on goal.
The Huskies fired off the first two shots of the game, forcing the Portland goalkeeper to make a pair of saves before Coffee struck from inside the box in the 29th minute. Jaret Townsend recorded the assist.
Washington had its best opportunity to extend the lead during the 61st minute. Smith fired a shot from the top of the box and added another during a 35-second span to keep the pressure on the Portland defense.
