No. 11 Washington Opens Season With 2-1 Victory
August 25, 2017 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE -- The No. 11 University of Washington men's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a 2-1 victory over No. 20 New Mexico Friday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies scored in the first half before tacking on another in the second and held the Lobo offense scoreless until the 85th minute of the contest.
Washington's first tally of the season came courtesy of sophomore Elijah Rice in the 35th minute. Senior Beau Blanchard sent it to the top corner of the box and after freshman James Smith deceived the opposition with a feint move, Rice buried home the Huskies' first goal of the season.
Washington put more pressure on in the second half after freshman Blake Bodily was tackled from behind on a breakaway which resulted in a penalty kick. Senior Scott Menzies calmly knocked it into the top right corner to give the home team a 2-0 advantage.
New Mexico made things interesting in the final minutes, scoring in the 85th minute. The Lobos lofted a ball that was knocked away by sophomore goalkeeper Saif Kerawala, but another Lobo retrieved the rebound and one-touched the ball into the back of the net.
Despite a battle to the very end, Washington was able to hold on in the final minutes to secure its 2017 opening season win.
The Huskies controlled the first half, holding a 5-1 shot advantage and 2-0 in shots on goal. New Mexico turned the momentum in the second half, outshooting the Huskies 7-3.
Sophomore Handwalla Bwana posted three shots to lead Washington's offense.
Straight from the Pitch:
Sophomore Elijah Rice
"It was an amazing game and great team effort. This goal manifested before it even happened. We've been putting in the work. I feel like we just picked up where we left off in the spring. We're looking good and we're like a family again."
Up Next: The Huskies are back at Husky Soccer Stadium on Sunday as they face Loyola Marymount at 3:30 p.m. PT.
