August 24, 2017 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE -- The much anticipated start to the 2017 Washington men's soccer season begins this weekend when the Huskies host No. 20 New Mexico Friday (Aug. 25) and Loyola Marymount (Aug. 27) at Husky Soccer Field.
The 11th-ranked Huskies hope to start the season by defending their home turf against two quality opponents. Both games can been seen live on Pac-12 Washington.
The Huskies return a blend of experience and youth that once again have them ranked among the nation's elite. Last season, the team reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament, finishing with a 14-7-0 record. Washington was 6-4-0 in Pac-12 play, 7-3-0 at home and 6-4-0 outside of Seattle.
Washington opens the season under the lights Friday when New Mexico travels north for a 8 p.m. PT kickoff. Sunday's game against Loyola Marymount will begin at 3:30 p.m. PT.
Under the direction of seventh-year head coach Jamie Clark, the Huskies return 54-percent of their scoring from last season, led by preseason All-Pac-12 selections junior Kyle Coffee and sophomore Handwalla Bwana, the 2016 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.
Featuring 10 freshmen and 14 returning letterwinners on the roster, Washington was picked to finish third in the Pac-12 Conference and will start the year ranked No. 11 in the national preseason rankings.
During the team's exhibition match against Portland on Aug. 19, Washington defeated the Pilots 1-0 as Coffee provided the game-winning goal during the first half. Sophomore Jaret Townsend recorded the assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Saif Kerawala recorded a match-high five saves.
