PUERTO VALLERTA, Mexico – The University of Washington women's golf team currently sits in third place following the second round of the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational Monday afternoon at the El Tigre Golf and Country Club in Puerto Vallarta. The Dawgs shot a 10-over 298 on Monday to move their two-day total to 17-over 593.
"It was a frustrating day for us," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We need to be much smarter with the little things and understand that making a bogey isn't the worst thing that could happen. I was proud of our freshmen, with them beginning to play a little better, that's a good sign for us. We are close to turning the corner."
Freshman Karen Miyamoto surged up the leaderboard as she finished the day tied for second at even-par 144. She fired a 1-under 71 on Monday to jump two spots up and sit two strokes off of the lead. Miyamoto had a strong front nine with two birdies to make the turn at two-under and was able to knock in two more birdies to finish her round under par.
She was followed by freshman Ellen Takada who sits tied for seventh at 2-over 146 (74-72). She made a move on the leaderboard as she jumped four spots thanks to her second-round score of even-par 72. Takada knocked in three birdies on the day and is just four strokes out of contention for the lead.
Sophomore Julianne Alvarez is tied for 27th with her two day total of 7-over 151 (73-78) while sophomore Wenyung Keh is in a tie for 38th at 9-over 153 (75-78). Sophomore Sarah Rhee rounds out the Husky contingent as she is tied for 44th at 10-over 154 (77-77).
No. 49 Wisconsin holds the team lead at 10-over 586 while UTSA is in second at 15-over 591. Kennesaw State's Dulcie Sverdloff holds the individual lead at 2-under 142 (73-69).
Washington closes out the three-day 54-hole tournament on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 6:30 a.m. CT.
