TEMPE, Arizona – The University of Washington women's golf team got off to a solid start at the PING/ASU Invitational on Friday as it is tied for third with a 1-under 287. The Huskies carded 17 birdies on the day, which was the second most out of the 14 teams.
"The conditions today were probably the best that we've seen," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "There was no wind and it wasn't hot so I was proud of how we took advantage of those conditions with our early start time. We were consistent and it was great that we were all hanging around par, you don't get too stressed when you're in that position. The mood has been great and I feel like we're continuing to build some momentum going forward."
The Huskies were led by sophomore Wenyung Keh who sits tied for sixth at 2-under 70 following the first 18 holes. Keh carded five birdies and went 2-under before the turn, en route to her third under-par round of the season and second in as many rounds.
"It was great to see Wenyung build off of the momentum she had in her last round in Mexico," said Mulflur. "She's starting to get into a good groove and if she can continue to stay consistent, we'll be in a good place. I was really proud of her today as she didn't get rattled or let any of the little things get to her, she just played her game and it showed on the scorecard."
Following her was freshman Ellen Takada as she is tied for 10th at 1-under 71. Takada, who led the Huskies at their last tournament with her second place finish, posted four birdies over her final 14 holes and is currently just seven shots off of the lead, held by Arizona State's Monica Vaughn.
Freshman Karen Miyamoto continued her solid play for UW as she went even par over her first 10 holes. Despite a blemish on the difficult par-4 hole 11, Miyamoto birdied hole 14 and ended with a 1-over 73 to tie for 26th heading into Saturday's second round.
Sophomores Julianne Alvarez and Sarah Rhee are also tied for 26th as they each posted a 1-over 73. Alvarez started the day hot, with two birdies in her first two holes while Rhee carded three birdies en route to her best single round score since the Pac-12 Preview in October.
The Huskies continue play in Tempe starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
