TEMPE, Arizona – The University of Washington women's golf team sits tied for fifth following Saturday's second round at the PING/ASU Invitational with its 5-over 581 (287-294). The Dawgs were led by sophomore Wenyung Keh who is tied for ninth following her 1-over second round score to move her to 1-under 143 (70-73).
"Today's conditions were a little but tougher and if we would have been more solid on the front nine, we would be in a better spot," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "I was proud of how we rallied on the back nine though and we played as well as anyone in that stretch, which are the toughest holes on the course. Everyone responded and everyone made improvements which was good to see. They're really starting to come together."
Keh's round got off to a shaky start with blemishes on five of her first 11 holes but she bounced back going three-under over the final seven en route to her 1-over 73. The sophomore birdied holes 13, 15 and 17 and sits just seven strokes off the lead, held by Arizona State's Monica Vaughn (8-under 136).
"It was good to see Wenyung play as strongly as she did today," said Mulflur. "Nothing really phased her and she just played the way we know she can."
She was followed by freshman Ellen Takada who carded the Huskies lone eagle of the day. Takada finished the second round tied for 15th with a total score of 1-over 145 (71-74). She also had a better back nine as she went even par over her final nine holes.
Sophomore Sarah Rhee is also tied for 15th as she rounded out her second round at even par 72 to move her overall score to 1-over 145 (73-72). Rhee climbed 11 spots up the leaderboard to make the biggest jump for the Huskies on Saturday thanks to going three-under on the back nine en route to her even par score.
"Sarah really rallied today," added Mulflur. "She was able to hold tough and really play solid which is what we needed to stay in contention."
Sophomore Julianne Alvarez started the day strong going clean on eight of her first nine holes and followed that with birdies on holes 11 and 16 before having a tough go on the 18th to finish at 4-over 148 (73-75). Freshman Karen Miyamoto rounded out the UW crew as she sits tied for 54 with a 7-over 151 (73-78).
Washington wraps up its final tournament of the regular season on Sunday morning, teeing off at 8:15 a.m. alongside UNLV and Kansas State.
