SEATTLE – The University of Washington women's golf team starts its postseason run this week at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships, hosted by Arizona at the Sewailo Golf Course in Tucson, Arizona. The tournament, which is in its 31st year, will be held Monday-Wednesday, April 24-26. Washington will be paired with California in the first of three rounds and will tee off at 8 a.m. on the 10th hole Monday morning. Admission to the Pac-12 Championships is free.
The Pac-12 has consistently had one of the best conferences in the nation this season as six teams are ranked in the top 25 – No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 UCLA, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 7 USC, No. 14 Arizona and No. 21 Colorado while the Huskies are currently at No. 42.
Washington will send sophomore Wenyung Keh, freshman Karen Miyamoto, sophomore Julianne Alvarez, freshman Ellen Takada and sophomore Sarah Rhee, who will play in that order.
On the Upswing
The Huskies have had a strong showing the last two times out, posting two top three finishes while also taking home a team title. First the Dawgs claimed the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational crown in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico as they posted a 9-over 873 (295-298-280) to earn the win. Their 8-under 280 final round was the Huskies best 18-hole round of the season. They followed that up by placing third at the prestigious PING/ASU Invitational with their best three-round score of the year, finishing at even-par 864 (287-294-283). Overall, Washington has earned four top five finishes in 11 events so far this season.
Last Year at the Pac-12 Championships
At the 2016 Pac-12 Championships, the Huskies posted a sixth place finish as they closed with their best round in California to go 2-over 866. Senior Charlotte Thomas put on the best showing by a Husky since 2006 as she finished tied for fifth with a 6-under 210 (75-67-68). It was also the fifth top-five finish by a Dawg at the annual league tournament and was the record tying 24th career top 10 finish for Thomas. Wenyung Keh finished tied for 20th (1-over 217) while Julianne Alvarez finished tied for 45th (8-over 224) and Sarah Rhee placed tied for 48th (9-over 225).
Freshmen Making Waves
For the second-straight year, the Washington freshmen have played a key role in UW's success. Karen Miyamoto, who joined the team in January has earned two top 10 finishes in just six events while recording the second-best stroke average on the team. Additionally, Ellen Takada has been UW's top finisher in each of the last two outings, placing tied for second at the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational before earning a fourth-place finish at the PING/ASU Invitational. The pair have each posted three rounds under par while Ellen's 5-under 211 at the PING/ASU was the best 54-hole score by a Husky this season.
Defending National Champions
The Huskies are coming off of a record setting season as they won the 2016 NCAA National Championship in Eugene last May, defeating Stanford in epic fashion with a 3-2 victory in extra holes. Three of UW's national championship members are still here in the purple and gold as they were freshmen during that exciting run. Sophomores Wenyung Keh, Julianne Alvarez and Sarah Rhee have all had significant impacts for the Dawgs this season in their second year with the Dawgs. The trio have combined for five top 10 finishes.
