UW in First Place after Round One of Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational
April 02, 2017 | Women's Golf
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Washington sits in first place after the first round of Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational as it shot a 7-over 295 following the first 18 holes at the El Tigre Golf and Country Club in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Huskies placed four of its five in the top 25 including two who are tied for fourth.
"Overall, today was a solid day, slightly windy but I was really impressed with how we handled ourselves," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Our freshman really stepped up and the more they can continue to do that, it will help our sophomores get even more comfortable in their rounds. We're all in contention and the course is playing pretty short so I'm hoping tomorrow we can really turn it up."
Washington led the 14-team field on par-five scoring going 8-under on those holes while also recorded two eagles on the par-5 14th hole. The Dawgs sit two strokes ahead of second place UTSA (9-over 297).
Sophomore Julianne Alvarez and freshman Karen Miyamoto each carded a 1-over 73 to finish tied for fourth and just three strokes off the lead. Despite going 2-over during her first nine holes, Alvarez responded after the turn with a birdie on the par-5 10th hole and an eagle on the par-5 14th to earn her 1-over finish.
"Julianne played a very solid round today which was great to see her build off of her great showing in the last tournament where she finished tied for 16th," added Mulflur."
Miyamoto, who joined the team in January, has been a force for the Huskies, and Sunday's opening round was no different as she played a fairly clean round opening with even pars through the first seven holes before posting birdies on two of the next five. Despite finishing with errors on holes 15 and hole one (she started on hole three), Miyamoto is in contention for her third top 15 finish in the last fourth outings.
Freshman Ellen Takada also found herself in the top 15 following day one as she is tied for 11th finishing at 2-over 74. Takada opened the day with a birdie, then went clean over the next eight holes. She finished with two more birdies en route to sitting four strokes behind first place.
Rounding out scoring for the Huskies were sophomores Wenyung Keh (3-over 75) and Sarah Rhee (5-over 77). Keh closed her round strong knocking in birdies on two of her final five holes while Rhee was the other Husky with an eagle on day one as she only needed three shots on the par-5 14th hole to make it in.
The Huskies return to the course at 12 p.m. PT on Monday, April 3 for 18 holes in a shotgun format. Live scoring can be found on golfstat.com.
