Huskies Drop Match With 12th Ranked Cal 1-4
April 16, 2017 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – In their final home match of the 2017 season, the No. 37 Washington men's tennis team fell 1-4 to No. 12 California today at Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium.
The Huskies were unable to claim the doubles point to begin today's match, falling first on court one, with Jake Douglas and Piers Foley dropping a 6-2 match. Cal was able to clinch the doubles point by winning the match on court three 6-4, as court two's match went unfinished.
"I don't think we came out as well today in doubles," said head coach Matt Anger. "They got on us right away. Wendell was a little emotional with Senior Day and had kind of a slow start, but that just shows how important it is to him."
To begin singles, California claimed first set wins on courts one through four, but the Huskies took the first match. On court six, Foley defeated freshman Dominic Barretto to draw the match even at 1-1. The Bears reclaimed the lead shortly after, with No. 45 Andre Goransson defeating Jake Douglas on court two 6-4, 6-3.
"In singles I thought we came out a little better today," said Anger. "We were up a break at number one and two singles and we started out fine at four, five and six. Enzo even got a decent start at number three, so right down the line we were alright, but Cal is a good team."
In a tough match on court one, No. 90 Mitch Stewart was unable to grab the win against the 15th ranked Florian Lakat, bringing the score to 3-1. Cal claimed the victory with a win on court three, and the remaining matches went unfinished on courts four and five.
"There's a reason why they're tough, they were NCAA semifinalists last year and their top four guys are back this year," said Anger. "So we've got to start, sustain and finish; I thought we started alight today, some guys were able to sustain, but over time it just gets tough."
The Huskies will close out the 2017 season in Eugene, Ore. this coming Saturday, when they face the Ducks at 2 p.m.
