Dawgs Drop Match With No. 15 Stanford
April 14, 2017 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – In a tight contest today the Washington men's tennis team was unable to come out on top against No. 15 Stanford, falling 4-0 at Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium.
"It was a tough match, they're very solid on every court," said head coach Matt Anger.
Stanford came out aggressive in doubles, taking early leads on courts one and two. After the Cardinal claimed court one, Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer took down Michael Genender and Sameer Kumar 6-4. On court three, Amit Batta and Wendell Watanabe were caught in a tie-breaker with Brandon Sutter and David Wilczynski. After trading points back and forth Stanford came out on top of a battle in the tie-break 11-9 to take court three 7-6.
"I think we definitely had opportunities in the doubles," said Anger. "I think if we had that point under our belt we can start to put a little more pressure on them, but instead it was the other way around."
In singles, Washington was able to take two of the first sets on courts four and six. On court three, Stanford took a 2-0 lead with a win by Wilczynski, and extended their lead shortly after with a win on court one. Battling back on multiple courts, Washington was unable to stop the Cardinal from clinching, as they claimed court five to go up 4-0.
"They got the doubles point and then they got up quickly on a lot of courts in singles," said Anger. "We started to look like we could get back into it with Jake up 6-5 in the second, and Amit was up in his second set 4-1. Gal was doing fine on his court as was Piers Foley, and we started to put a little pressure on them but it's just tough when you dig a hole as deep as we did, against a team that's very solid."
Although the remaining matches went unfinished Douglas led in his second set 6-5, with Gal Hakak and Foley claiming their first sets.
The Huskies will look to rebound on Sunday, when they host No. 12 Cal at noon for Senior Day at Bill Quillian Stadium.
