SEATTLE – After six consecutive matches on the road the Washington men's tennis team returns home this weekend, hosting No. 15 Stanford on Friday April 14th at 5 p.m., and No. 12 California on Sunday April 16th at noon.
The 37th ranked Huskies (12-7, 1-3 Pac-12) split their matches this past weekend, defeating Arizona 4-3 on Friday before falling at Utah on Sunday 2-4. Jake Douglas picked up the clinching win for the Dawgs on Friday, coming out on top of a battle with Trent Botha on court three. Taking the first set 7-6 by winning the tie-break 12-10, the junior from Rolling Hills, Calif. was unable to repeat in the second, falling 6-7 (6-8), but claimed the third set 6-3 to clinch the victory for UW. Douglas currently owns a 62-24 singles record for his career at Washington, giving him the ninth-best winning-percentage in school history at .721.
The Cardinal will enter Friday's match with a 13-5 (3-1 Pac-12) record this season, having most recently defeated USC before falling to UCLA at home 2-4. Stanford owns six ITA rankings across singles and doubles, led by junior Tom Fawcett, who sits at 10th in the country in singles and ranks 63rd in doubles paired with Yale Goldberg. Head coach Paul Goldstein is at the helm, and in his 3rd season with the program.
The Huskies will face another tough challenge on Sunday when they take on No. 12 Cal (15-6, 2-1 Pac-12) at noon. Last weekend, the Golden Bears had their match with UCLA postponed due to weather, before falling to USC 0-4. In his 24th season as head coach, Peter Wright's squad has been guided by senior Florian Lakat, who is ranked 15th by the ITA in singles and fourth in doubles paired with Filip Bergevi. Before coming to Seattle on Sunday, California will take on Oregon in Eugene, Ore. Friday.
Sunday's match against Cal will also mark the final home match of the 2017 season for UW, with the Dawgs set to honor seniors Gal Hakak and Wendell Watanabe before the match for senior day.
Each match is scheduled to be played indoors at Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium, but will be moved indoors to the Nordstrom Tennis Center if needed due to weather. Each facility will host a live stream and scoring page, which can be found at the corresponding links above.
