Matuszak Saves The Day With Walk-Off Blast
March 04, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE Β βΒ Senior Gage Matuszak hit a three-run walk-off home run in the 10th inning to lift the 11th-ranked Huskies to a 8-5 win over Sacramento State in the first game of a Saturday double-header at Husky ballpark.
Β
Matuszak came up as a pinch-hitter with one out in the 11th and took a 2-2 pitch from Sac State reliever Chad Perry (0-1) deep to center field. The ball carried just over the glove of Hornets outfielder Ian Dawkins and off the batter's eye and back into play. After some confusion, Matuszak rounded the bases and was greeted at home by his celebrating teammates.
Β
The home run revived the Huskies (5-4) after they saw a 5-2 lead in the ninth inning disappear. Β Sac State tied things up in its last at bats thanks to a three-run home run by PJ Floyd. The first two Hornets reached on singles and Floyd deposited a 2-0 pitch from Alex Hardy over the right-field fence for the game-tying blast.
Β
Hardy (2-0) set the Hornets down after that and pitched a perfect 10th inning to earn the win.
Β
The Dawgs grabbed the early lead in the first game, scoring on a clutch, two-out hit by first baseman John Naff. Kyle London started the inning by perfectly executing a two-strike bunt down the third-base line for a lead-off single. He stole second and stayed there until the clean-up hitter Naff dumped a single in front of left fielder Andrew McWilliams, allowing London to score easily from second.
Β
Washington added two more runs to the scoreboard in the second without the benefit of a hit to make the score 3-0. Jack Meggs was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Josh Cushing followed with a four-pitch walk by Sac State freshman pitcher Austin Roberts. After a Levi Jordan sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, AJ Graffanino laid down a sac bunt of his own that scored Meggs and moved Cushing down to third. With London at bat, Roberts uncorked a wild pitch allowing Cushing to trot home for the third run of the game.
Β
The Hornets (7-2) pecked away at the Huskies lead in the third, scoring once to make it 3-1. They strung together four-consecutive hits off of UW starter Joe DeMers, the final one by McWilliams driving in a run.
Β
UW got runs in the fourth and fifth to extend its lead back to 5-1. Joey Morgan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded forcing in Graffanino, who singled earlier in the fourth, and an inning later, Jordan sent Meggs home with a two-out single.
Β
Staked to a 5-1 lead, DeMers got the first two outs in the sixth before allowing three-straight singles, ending his day after 99 pitches. The UW sophomore allowed 10 hits, struck out three and allowed his first walk in 19 2/3 innings, but had to settle for a no-decision.
Β
Sacramento State outhit Washington, 14-6, but stranded 11 runners on the bases.
Β
Six different Huskies accounted for the teams hit total.
