Huskies Hold On For Sweep In Game Two, 3-2
March 04, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE ย โย MJ Hubbs homered and Joey Morgan drove in two runs to support an outstanding pitching effort by a pair of Husky freshmen as No. 11 Washington beat Sacramento State, 3-2, to sweep a double header Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
ย
Jordan Jones (2-1), making his third career start on the mound for the Huskies (6-4), was excellent all evening in six innings of work. He allowed just five base runners on two hits, two walks and a hit batter. Jones struck out four.
ย
Fellow freshman Josh Burgmann threw the final three innings, allowing just a two-out, two-run home run in the ninth inning to pick up his first career save.
ย
Hubbs, a senior outfielder, broke up a scoreless game in the fourth with a solo blast to left-center field. He took a 1-0 offering from Sacramento State starter Parker Brahms (1-1) and hit a towering shot that sailed over the wall.
ย
Hubbs accounted for the Huskies second run of the game too. He singled with two outs in the sixth and came all the way around from first on a double by Morgan.
ย
The Huskies picked up a crucial insurance run in the eighth inning when Morgan laid down a safety squeeze with runners on the corners that allowed Kyle London to score and give the Huskies a 3-0 advantage.
ย
For the second-consecutive game, UW saw a three-run ninth inning lead shrink when PJ Floyd jacked a home run over the right-field fence with a runner on, but this time it was a two-run shot instead of a three-run homer.
ย
Burgmann was able to get pinch-hitter Kody Reynolds to strikeout looking to end the game and secure the doubleheader sweep.
ย
"I was happy with the way we pitched, and I thought it was a good lesson for us when we manufactured that third run in the eighth," Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs said. "That third run made a big difference."
In game one of the double header, the Huskies lost a three-run lead on Floyd's ninth inning homer, but Gage Matuszak rescued the day with a walk-off, three-run shot of his own in the 10th inning.
ย
Hubbs and AJ Graffanino each tallied two of the Huskies' six hits in game two.
ย
Sac State (7-3) and Washington will wrap up the series Sunday with a noon game at Husky Ballpark.
