BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Washington women's golf team posted a 10th-place showing at the LSU Tiger Classic, finishing with a 39-over 903 (293-306-304) and placing two in the top 35. The Dawgs were led by sophomore Julianne Alvarez who carded a 4-over 220 to finish tied for 16th.
"It was a tough day but there were a lot of positives for us to take away from this tournament," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Our whole lineup is either freshmen or sophomores and at the end of the day, we're continuing to grow. We just missed in some places on this course and when you do that you pay dearly."
Alvarez's three-day scorecard was 70-70-80 en route to her second top 20 finish of the spring season. She posted 11 birdies over the three-round event, which was forced to a two-day tournament as Saturday's round was moved to Friday due to impending weather.
Sophomore Wenyung Keh earned a top 40 finish as she tied for 34th at 10-over 226 (74-75-77). She was followed by freshman Karen Miyamoto who tied for 52nd and posted a 4-over 76 during her final 18 holes to help her climb one spot up the leaderboard finishing at 15-over 231 (75-80-76).
Sarah Rhee posted a 19-over 235 (74-81-80) to tie for 64th while freshman Ellen Takada saved her best round for last to help her jump 16 spots on the leaderboard, finishing tied for 70th with a 21-over 237 (79-87-71). Takada recorded UW's only sub-par round on Sunday, bouncing back from a second round score of 15-over, thanks to four birdies.
"To see how Ellen played today was huge for us," added Mulflur. "Both her and Karen just need to continue to get reps at this level and with that, they will continue to get better."
Freshman Christina Wang, who was playing as an individual also had a solid final round, as she climbed six spots en route to a tie for 47th showing. She carded a 14-over 230 with rounds of 76-79-75.
No. 11 Duke won the overall title, finishing at 10-under 854 (285-286-283) while No. 19 Oklahoma State finished second (8-over 872) and No. 15 Arkansas came in third (9-over 873). Duke's Leona Maguire claimed the individual crown with her 10-under 206 effort.
The Huskies next head to Puerto Vallarta to take part in the inaugural Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational, April 2-4.
