Huskies Shutout, 1-0, As Ducks Clinch Series
March 25, 2017 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. Β βΒ Oregon scored a run in the first inning and made it stand as the Ducks (15-5, 4-1 Pac-12) held on for a 1-0 win over No. 22 Washington (13-9, 3-2) Saturday night at PK Park in Eugene, Ore.
Β
The Ducks clinched the series with the win by virtue of also winning Friday night's game, 4-3.
Β
Oregon collected four hits on the evening with only one reaching the outfield, but it was a big one. Ducks' freshman Gabe Matthews β the offensive hero of the game on Friday β picked up where he left off with a RBI double off Huskies' starter Chris Micheles (1-1) in the first inning to give Oregon a 1-0 lead. It was his third double in the series β all of which have drove in runs.
Β
That was the only run of the game as both pitching staffs were stellar.
Β
Oregon starter Matt Mercer threw seven shutout innings, allowing six hits, walking one batter and striking out seven to improve to 4-1 on the year.
Β
Micheles threw the first two innings for the Huskies before giving way to junior Noah Bremer. The righty made his second-consecutive relief appearances after making 35-straight starts and was once outstanding. He threw six scoreless innings to extend a personal streak up to 14-straight shutout innings, while the UW bullpen's scoreless streak now stands at 26 innings in Pac-12 play.
Β
Bremer allowed just three hits β all infield singles β walked four and struck out seven Ducks.
Β
The Huskies had the tying and go-ahead runners on base in the ninth inning, but Oregon closer Kenyon Yovan got a strikeout and fly out to preserve the lead and pick up his eighth save of the season.
Β
The Huskies and Ducks wrap up the series Sunday at 2 p.m.
