Huskies Shutout, 1-0, As Ducks Clinch Series
March 25, 2017 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon scored a run in the first inning and made it stand as the Ducks (15-5, 4-1 Pac-12) held on for a 1-0 win over No. 22 Washington (13-9, 3-2) Saturday night at PK Park in Eugene, Ore.
The Ducks clinched the series with the win by virtue of also winning Friday night's game, 4-3.
Oregon collected four hits on the evening with only one reaching the outfield, but it was a big one. Ducks' freshman Gabe Matthews – the offensive hero of the game on Friday – picked up where he left off with a RBI double off Huskies' starter Chris Micheles (1-1) in the first inning to give Oregon a 1-0 lead. It was his third double in the series – all of which have drove in runs.
That was the only run of the game as both pitching staffs were stellar.
Oregon starter Matt Mercer threw seven shutout innings, allowing six hits, walking one batter and striking out seven to improve to 4-1 on the year.
Micheles threw the first two innings for the Huskies before giving way to junior Noah Bremer. The righty made his second-consecutive relief appearances after making 35-straight starts and was once outstanding. He threw six scoreless innings to extend a personal streak up to 14-straight shutout innings, while the UW bullpen's scoreless streak now stands at 26 innings in Pac-12 play.
Bremer allowed just three hits – all infield singles – walked four and struck out seven Ducks.
The Huskies had the tying and go-ahead runners on base in the ninth inning, but Oregon closer Kenyon Yovan got a strikeout and fly out to preserve the lead and pick up his eighth save of the season.
The Huskies and Ducks wrap up the series Sunday at 2 p.m.
