February 05, 2017 | Men's Tennis
MALIBU, Calif. – The Washington men's tennis team fell short in a tough match with Pepperdine today by a final score of 4-3 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
"It was a frustrating day for me and I think we could have done better," said head coach Matt Anger. "We didn't come out as well as we could in doubles and got down and had to fight back."
Pepperdine took the first match in doubles on court two, but Amit Batta and Sebastian Hawken grabbed a 6-4 win on court three. On court one, Kawika Lam and Wendell Watanabe faced off with Stefan Menichella and Jack Van Slyke, with the Waves coming out on top 6-3 to take an early 1-0 lead.
Pepperdine extended their lead to 2-0, grabbing the first match on court two as Pedro Iamachkine defeated Gal Hakak 6-3, 6-1. After falling in the first set 6-4, Hawken came back to win the second and third sets 6-1 to bring the score to 2-1.
On court three, Jake Douglas won his first set 6-3 but Pepperdine's Menichella came back in the second 6-4. The Waves extended their lead to 3-1 with a win in the third set of court three's match 6-3.
Playing in his second match at court one this season, Enzo Sommer battled back in the second set after dropping the first with a 6-1 win. In the third set, Sommer and Guilherme Hadlich battled back and forth, leading to a 6-6 draw. The score remained close throughout the tie-breaker, with Hadlich defeating Sommer by a final score of 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (6).
Playing out the remaining matches, freshman Amit Batta continued his undefeated streak in the regular season with a tough 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3) win. On court five Joao Barra won his first set 7-6(6) before dropping the second set 3-6. Battling out a tough third set, the junior picked up his eighth singles win on the year with a 7-5 win in the tie-breaker.
"There were a lot of close matches in singles and usually I like our side when we are able to get to longer matches like that," said Anger. "That's why I'm a little disappointed. I think we had a fair number of opportunities and weren't able to break through."
The Dawgs will return to Seattle next weekend, hosting Portland in the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Saturday February 11th at 2:30 p.m.
