UW Defends Home Court Against Portland
February 11, 2017 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – In their return home today, the Washington men's tennis team defeated Portland 6-1 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center for their sixth win of the season.
"I'm definitely thrilled with the win, it was good to come back and pull this match out," said head coach Matt Anger. "The part that I liked the most, since we faced Alabama, was just how solid we were all the way through the lineup."
All three courts began close in doubles, with the Huskies and Pilots trading leads. Jake Douglas and Piers Foley picked up the first match to finish on court two with a 6-4 win over Felix Fan and Alex Wallace. Down 3-5 on court three, Amit Batta and Gal Hakak won four straight games to claim the win 7-5 and clinch the doubles point for the Huskies.
Singles began with Washington and Portland each winning three first sets, with Hakak taking the first match on court three 6-3, 6-3. After winning his doubles match earlier, Batta moved to 10-0 in singles and doubles in dual match play with a 7-5, 6-2 win on court five over Carlos Donat. On court two, Douglas took the first set against Mathieu Garcia 6-2 but surrendered the second 6-1. However, the junior from Rolling Hills, Calif. battled out a tough third set 6-3 to clinch the match for the Huskies, giving them a 4-0 lead.
After dropping a tough first set 7-6 with a 7-5 tie-breaker, Sebastian Hawken was unable to bounce back in the second set, falling 6-4 on court six. On court four, Foley narrowly lost the first set 7-6 after surrendering the tie-break, but bounced back to force a third set with a 6-2 win in the second. The sophomore gave the Huskies their fifth point of the night with a 6-4 win in the third set.
"We still had some opportunities we missed," said Anger. "We'd like to take care of all of those, but the guys competed very well throughout."
On court one, Sommer faced the 56th ranked player in the country, Michail Pervolarakis, and dropped a tough first set 6-4. However, last year's ITA Northwest Rookie of the Year bounced back with a 6-3 second set win before grabbing the win with a 6-2 third set victory.
"I like Portland's team and I think they have a good shot to do well this year," said Anger. "It just shows how good of a win it was today."
The Huskies will have the next weekend off before hosting Nevada on Friday February 24th at 5 p.m., and Indiana on Sunday the 26th at noon.
