February 24, 2017 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Back in action at home after their break last weekend, the No. 32 Washington men's tennis team defeated Nevada today 7-0 in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
For the sixth time this season the Huskies began their match by clinching the doubles point and owned leads on all three courts for a majority of play. On court one, Enzo Sommer and Wendell Watanabe defeated Augustin Delahodde and Julien Evrard 6-1, with Jake Douglas and Piers Foley finishing shortly afterwards on court two.
"I thought we came out ready to go in the doubles," said head coach Matt Anger. "I feel like we've been making good progress with them the last couple of weeks in practice, so it was good to see that in a match."
Washington dominated today's singles matches, taking the first set on all six courts. Senior Gal Hakak continued the Dawgs' momentum with a quick 6-0 first set, before clinching his match with a 6-3 win in the second. On court two, Douglas brought the score to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Delahodde, with Sebastian Hawken clinching the win for the Huskies on court six.
"Nevada has got some talented guys," said Anger. "I'm happy we were able to get through those matches without losing a set to those talented players."
After winning Pac-12 Player of the Week honors two weeks ago, Sommer continued his stellar play this year, defeating Evrard 6-3, 6-4 on court one. Junior Joao Barra moved to 5-0 in singles in dual match play with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court five, while Amit Batta bounced back from a tough first set with a 6-0 second set win to clinch the sweep for UW.
The Huskies will continue their play at home this weekend, taking on No. 45 Indiana at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday February 26th in the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Admission to the match will be free, with a live stream and scoring page available to those who can't make it to the match.
