SEATTLE – The Washington men's tennis team will be back in action this weekend, hosting Nevada on Friday February 24th at 5 p.m. and Indiana on Sunday the 26th at 10:30 a.m. in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
With the Huskies having the last weekend off, the team most recently defeated Portland at home, grabbing a 6-1 victory to move their record to 6-2 this season. On court one in UW's victory over the Pilots, sophomore Enzo Sommer defeated the 56th ranked player in the country, helping him win his first Pac-12 Player of the Week honor in his career. Freshman Amit Batta also continued his unbeaten streak, leading the match off with a doubles win before picking up the win in singles to move to 10-0 in dual matches. With the latest ITA National Team Rankings moving to the top-50 this past week, the Huskies were given their first rank of the season, coming in at 32nd in the country.
Nevada will bring a 2-2 record to Seattle this weekend, after having two of their previous matchups cancelled due to weather. They are coached by Sylvain Malroux who is in his 2nd year, and led on the court by freshman Julien Evrard, who owns a 10-9 record in singles this year. With one of their postponed matches skipped last weekend, the Wolf Pack were last in action on February 10th-12th, grabbing a win over UC Santa Cruz before falling to Santa Clara and Pacific. This will be the fourth matchup between these two programs, with the Huskies leading the series 3-0.
After beginning the season by winning seven straight matches, Indiana has slipped to 7-4, including two losses last weekend against Memphis and Notre Dame. In his 3rd year at the helm, head coach Jeremy Wurtzman has guided his team to a top-50 ranking in the latest ITA polls, coming in at 45th in the nation. The team is led by sophomore Antonio Cembellin, who was ranked 125th in the latest singles rankings, and junior duo Raheel Manji and Keivon Tabrizi who came in at 50th in the ITA's doubles ranks. Last season Indiana defeated the Huskies 5-2 in Bloomington, Ind., drawing the all-time series at 1-1.
As always each match is free to attend at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, with pizza and water served to all in attendance between the doubles and singles.
