NEW ORLEANS, La. – University of Washington freshman Karen Miyamoto sits tied for fourth following the first round at the 2017 AllState Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship Sunday afternoon after she shot a 2-under 70. Washington as a team is in 13th following a first round score of 13-over 301.
"Overall, today was definitely a better day for us as a whole squad," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "I feel like we are getting really close to breaking through which is good to see. There's lots to be excited about and I think everybody feels a little bit better about where we are at right now."
"We just need to be a little better at staying right where we are and not letting anything else get in the way of that," Mulflur added. "The conditions today were perfect outside of it being a little breezy and with it not being a very long course, it's definitely there for the taking. "
Miyamoto was one of two players to record an eagle during the first 18 holes at English Turn and Golf Country Club as she needed just three shots on the par-5 hole six for her first eagle as a Husky.
The freshman opened the day with two birdies over the first five holes before rattling off four-straight birdies on her ninth-12th holes to put her at 4-under. Despite having errors on four of her last five holes, the highlight of the day was that eagle on hole six thanks to a 25 foot putt to put her just two shots off of the individual lead, held by Denver's Mariell Bruun (4-under 68).
Miyamoto was followed by sophomore Julianne Alvarez who carded a 3-over 75 after closing her round with two birdies over her final four holes. Fellow sophomore Wenyung Keh was just behind her finishing with a 4-over 76. Freshman EunWon Park sits tied for 76th after an 8-over 80 while freshman Christina Wang is at 10-over 82 which is tied for 83rd.
No. 11 Miami leads the team field with the only under-par score at 1-under 287. They are followed by Denver (2-over-290), No. 21 Texas (3-over-291), No. 3 Florida (4-over-292) and Houston (4-over292.
Day two of the prestigious event, which features seven teams ranked in the top 25, starts at 8 a.m. CT on Monday and potentially may feature both the second and third rounds due to impending weather in the New Orleans area.
