Dawgs Tied for Fifth at Bruin Wave Invitational
February 27, 2017 | Women's Golf
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Following a weather shortened day, the University of Washington Women's Golf Team sits tied for fifth (29-over) at the Bruin Wave Invitational. Only two Huskies were able to complete both rounds as round two will resume at 8 a.m. on Tuesday immediately followed by the final 18 holes.
"Today's conditions were extremely windy and cold with torrential rain, so every team had a rough go," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "The greens on this course are fair and fast and with the wind, it just made for a tough second round. I think we responded well in the afternoon despite the conditions and we're still in it, so if we can get a little momentum going in the morning that would speak volumes to our squad."
Washington was once again led by freshman Karen Miyamoto who climbed 13 spots during her second round to finish the shortened day tied for 15th alongside sophomore Wenyung Keh. Miyamoto and Keh are both at 6-over par with three holes to play in round two Tuesday morning. Miyamoto opened Monday with a 4-over but responded with a 2-over during her final holes to move up.
Keh finished 33 of 36 holes on day one and also sits at six-over heading into the conclusion of round two on Tuesday. She opened the day with an even-par first round after carding birdies on hole five and 16. She had a tougher go over her final 14 holes with five errors and will have four holes left to play on Tuesday in round two.
She was followed by freshman Christina Wang who sits tied for 18th at 7-over. Despite posting a 4-under round over the first 18, Wang responded on her second 15 holes to climb 10 spots on the leaderboard despite the weather conditions.
Sophomore Julianne Alvarez is 37th heading into Tuesday as sits at 10-over. Alvarez opened the day with a solid 4-over 77 which included two birdies in a span of four holes but her second round which was only 12 holes long featured six errors along with one birdie to put her 12 shots off the lead.
Rounding out the UW crew was freshman EunWon Park, who finished her 34 holes at 12-over and will have two more holes remaining on Tuesday before the final round.
No. 1 Stanford leads the team field at 9-over and is followed by UCLA at 22 over, USC at 25-over, Colorado at 28-over and California and Stanford's second squad tied with Washington at 29-over.
Day two starts at 8 a.m. at San Luis Obispo Golf Course on Tuesday. Live scoring can be found on golfstat.com.
