LOS VERDES, Calif. – The University of Washington women's golf team is in 15th following the first 18 holes at the 2017 Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge on Sunday held at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in California. Washington shot a 22-over 306 to cap off day one in a round that saw only one team shoot under par.
"It was a tough day for us today, we are young and learning though," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Our attitudes have been great and our group is beginning to understand what it takes for us to be a great team."
The Dawgs were led by sophomore Julianne Alvarez who is tied for 34th at 3-over 74. Alvarez started the day clean through the first 12 holes staying even until she hit hole 13 where she bogeyed three of the next four holes before finishing with two even pars to close out her day. She sits six strokes off the lead, held by Duke's Leona Maguire (3-under 68).
She was followed by sophomore Wenyung Keh at 4-over 75 which ties for 43rd and freshman Christina Wang who is tied for 73rd at 7-over 78. Wang knocked in birdies on holes seven and 15, which tied the most by a Husky on day one.
Freshman Karen Miyamoto shot an 8-over 79 to wrap up her first round as a Husky and despite a tough start on the front nine, Miyamoto responded and went even par over her final nine holes to tie for an 83th standing after day one.
Rounding out the UW crew was sophomore Sarah Rhee who shot an 11-over 82 to tie for 86th heading in the second of three rounds in California. Freshman EunWon Park, who was competing as an individual, finished day one tied for 73rd at 7-over 78.
No. 7 UCLA leads the tournament at 4-under 280 and is followed by No. 2 USC (1-over 285), No. 22 Duke (3-over 287), No. 6 Florida (6-over 290) and No. 46 UNLV (8-over 292).
Washington starts day two of the prestigious event at 9 a.m. on Monday with 18 holes followed by 18 on Tuesday.
