Gallimore Wins 250th With UW 1-0 Over Oregon
October 08, 2017 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – The Washington Huskies picked up another shutout, winning 1-0 against the Oregon Ducks for Head Coach Lesle Gallimore's 250th win with the Huskies. Kimberly Keever had the goal for the Huskies, with Sarah Shimer earning her tenth shutout.
Shimer has now tied the Husky record for most shutouts in a single season, set by Kelsey Rasmussen in 2004. Shimer faced two shots on goal on the day, with the Huskies outshooting Oregon 13-5 overall in the game.
"We knew going into today's game it would be a challenge to continue to defend and be disciplined," said Gallimore. "It was a challenge to stay in the moment and keep working to get a goal. We were very good defensively again and played better and better as the game wore on. Our backline and Shimer were solid again, composed under pressure. It was a very gritty effort today."
It took just 30 seconds for the Husky offense to come to life. The Huskies had a strong counterattack that began with a Jessica Udovich clearance that found Keever. The attack would end with Shannon Simon sending a through ball that was cleared out for the corner to stop a breakaway for Amanda Perez.
At 17', the Huskies second corner of the day ended in their first shot. Simon sent in a cross, then got the ball back after a clearance. Her reentry found Dumesnil, who got her foot high to the ball and bounced a shot into the goalie's chest.
20 minutes into the game, Lewis stole the ball near the half, stepping in and sending it straight to Simon off the tackle. That led to a quick counterattack, with Simon's pass to Keever allowing Keever to carry it unmolested for 20 yards. The senior forward then unleashed a shot from just outside the box. That shot went high over the crossbar by a bit as it curved downward too late.
It was another corner by the Huskies that led to a scoring chance, this one at 34'. Simon's entry dropped to a diving Ava Lewis in the center of the box. Lewis leapt forward and got all of the ball to send a strong shot straight at the corner of goal. With the goalie nowhere in sight, an Oregon defender managed to get their body in front of the ball and clear it away after a few dangerous bounces in the box.
The Huskies led in shots 8-3 at the half but the game remained scoreless, knotted at 0-0.
Washington took the lead early in the second half, with Keever scoring her fifth goal of the year in the 48th minute. Simon created the play, carrying it up the wing then sliding it through two defenders into the box. Keever sprinted forward for the ball and slid into her shot, sending into the back corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Keever had an impressive tackle at 60' to end one of Oregon's few attacks in the second half. Keever picked the pocket of an Oregon midfielder to start a three-on-one break that lead to a blocked centering pass.
"It was a well-timed, well-executed goal. The movement and timing made it look easy," said Gallimore. "When we are quick, clean, and simple, we can be very dangerous."
Oregon's only real opportunity of the second half came in the 85th minute on a free kick from the wing. With the Ducks bringing everyone forward for the attack, Shimer rushed forward and caught the cross with authority to snuff out that chance. Ball control and strong defense wrapped up the win from there for the Huskies.
The Huskies have just one game next week as they travel to Palo Alto, California to take on Stanford on Friday, October 13 at 8:00 pm.
