NORTH PLAINS, Ore. --- Carl Yuan continued his stellar play with a 1-under 70, finishing in fifth to lead Washington to a 12th-place finish at the Nike Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon.
Yuan performed well throughout the week, closing out the three-round tournament with a 9-under 204 (68-66-70). The junior was in contention for the top spot through much of the day until a tough double-bogey on his 16th hole dropped him down to fifth.
"Carl played a superb tournament and was unlucky to not shoot lower than he did," said head coach Alan Murray. "He continues to perform really well and is a huge player for us. He is creeping closer to winning and it's a matter of time I feel."
Yuan's great tournament helped pace the Huskies, though the final round was a bit rough. Washington finished with a 7-over 290 on the final day to take 12th place overall at 859 (282-287-290). Oklahoma took top honors with a 27-under 825 (272-277-276) with Stanford taking second at 24-under 828 (274-273-281).
"Overall, I was disappointed with our tournament as a team but it let's us know we have to get better for sure," said Murray. We wil lhave a couple of days to get some work done before heading to California for our next event."
Henry Lee wrapped up the event with a solid 1-under 70 for a score of 3-over 215 (71-74-70), moving up into 38th place overall. Frank Garber had a 6-over 77 to record a 5-over 217 (69-71-77).
Rounding out the group was Noah Woolsey at 14-over 217 (74-76-75) and Jordan Lu at 21-over (78-79-75).
Washington returns to the course Oct- 9-10, taking part in the Alister Mackenzie Collegiate Invitational at the Meadows Club in Fairfax, Calif.
