October 24, 2017 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE - The Washington Huskies will take off on their last road trip of the regular season this week, heading to Arizona for two games. The Huskies will play the Arizona Wildcats on Thursday, October 26 at 7:00 pm and the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 pm.
This road trip marks the end of a two-week gauntlet that saw the Huskies play three teams ranked in the top six in the nation, taking on #1 Stanford, #6 USC, and #2 UCLA. The Huskies currently sit at 2-4-2 in conference play with three games to go. Sarah Shimer made eight saves against UCLA, her third game of eight or more saves this season. Shimer is now second in the Pac-12 in saves with 66 on the season, behind only Oregon State's Bella Geist. She is also tied for the conference lead in shutouts with ten.
The Arizona Wildcats are currently fifth in the Pac-12 with a record of 4-2-2 in conference and 7-4-4 overall. Arizona is undefeated in its last four games, going 2-0-2 with wins over Oregon State and Utah and ties against UCLA and Colorado. The conference losses for the Wildcats have come against Stanford and USC, which are currently first and second in the conference standings.
Cali Crisler leads Arizona in scoring with one goal and six assists. Her six assists are more than double any other Wildcats' total and are tied for sixth in the Pac-12, behind five players with seven. Gabi Stoian leads the Wildcats in goals with three, one of five Wildcats with multiple goals thus far. In goal is Lainey Burdett, who has played to a 0.74 GAA in 15 starts.
All-time, the Huskies hold a 11-4-2 edge over the Wildcats. Washington has lost just once in the last 11 matchups between the two teams, stretching back to 2006. Last year, Washington won 2-1 over Arizona in Seattle.
The Arizona State Sun Devils are 4-9-3 on the season and 1-5-2 in the Pac-12 and are currently mired in a seven-game winless streak. The last win for the Sun Devils came September 22, 2-1 over Oregon State. Since then, Arizona State is 0-5-2, finishing last week with a 2-2 tie at Utah. Arizona State will play Washington State before taking on the Huskies.
Jemma Purfield is the top scorer for Arizona State with six goals and three assists. Her 15 points are ten more than any other Sun Devil, while her six goals rank seventh in the Pac-12 and her 15 points eighth. Jazmarie Mader is the team leader in assists with four. Nikki Panas has been the primary goalie for Arizona State, going 4-6-3 with a 1.57 GAA in 13 starts. Megan Delaney has also played four games, with a 2.57 GAA.
Arizona State has a slight lead in the all-time series, sitting at 7-6-4 against the Huskies. The Sun Devils have won the last two games in the series, just the second time in history that either team has won multiple games in a row between these two. Washington's last win was a 2-1 victory in Seattle in 2014.
