Washington Falls 2-1 at California
October 15, 2017 | Men's Soccer
BERKELEY, Calif. --- California scored the go-ahead goal off a free kick in the 77th minute as Washington dropped its second-straight match, falling 2-1 at Edwards Stadium on hot Sunday afternoon in Berkeley.
The loss drops the Huskies to 9-4-1 on the season and to 2-2-1 in the Pac-12. The Golden Bears move to 9-3-0 and stay within a point of the top spot in the conference at 4-1-0.
Both teams looked solid on defense throughout the contest, with just 21 total shots being recorded in the contest. However, it was California which was able to get two past the Washington defense to pick up three points.
The Golden Bears opened the scoring on a tame looking play in the 11th minute. Cal's Ugo Rebecchini sent a long pass into the box from 40 yards away and Kerawala rushed off his line and attempted to catch it on the fly. But Shinya Kadono beat him and a UW defender to the spot, just getting his head on the ball enough to lift it over the arms of Kerawala and into the goal.
Five minutes later, the Huskies leveled the score thanks to an absolute rocket of a goal by Hauswirth. A free kick richoted off a defender and went right to Hauswirth who was just inside the 18 yard box. He cracked a hard shot into the upper right corner which the Cal netminder could do absolutely nothing to stop.
Cal looked to regain the lead again just before half as a shot richoted off an attacker and led Spencer Held right toward the goal. But Kerawala threw out an arm as Held got off his shot, deflecting out of danger.
In the 49th minute, Washington had a great chance with Elijah Rice finding a ball at his feet off a corner kick. The sophomore quickly spun and fired, but it was cleared off the line by a sliding Cal defender.
Just past the 73rd minute, Parrish recieved a nice ball out wide on a breakaway leading to a 1v1 chance with the keeper. His low blast was saved by the netminder.
Cal got the go-ahead goal off a free kick by Jose Carerra-Garcia in the 77th minute. The Golden Bears were on a break when John Magnus tackled a defender just outside of the box to stop the rush. On the ensuing free kick, Carrera-Garcia's shot deflected down off the cross bar and into the goal.
Washington's best chances came in the final two minutes as Blake Bodily and Justin Fiddes each sent nice crosses into the box. However, Callender was able to come off his line and easily intercept.
Washington remains winless when failing to score at least two goals in a match, dropping to 0-4-1 in such contests. The Huskies are 9-0 when they net two or more.
Washington returns home for its final two regular season home matches beginning with another battle against Stanford on Thursday beginning at 8:00 p.m. It's Sounders/Reign Night at Husky Soccer Stadium and part of a doubleheader with the UW women's soccer team facing USC at 5:00 p.m. Fans in attendance will be able to take photos with the MLS Cup and enter a raffle to win autographed memorabilia, including a Sounders jersey, a Clint Dempsey-autographed program, and more.
