Huskies Fall 2-1 to No. 6 Stanford
October 19, 2017 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- The second edition of the Pac-12 showdown between No. 21 Washington and No. 6 Stanford proved to live up to the hype as the teams combined for three early goals then battled hard throughout the rest of the match. However, in the end it was Stanford holding on for the 2-1 win over the Huskies on a rainy Thursday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
Stanford opened the scoring with a goal eight minutes in. The Cardinal attack brought a number of red and white shirts into the box. Bryce Marion took the initial shot from the right side of goal but Saif Kerawala made a great diving save. But the ball went right onto the goot of Amir Bashti, who sent it into the net for the opening goal.
Washington would respond just over one minute later as Kyle Coffee headed in a great cross from Justin Fiddes for his second goal of the season. Fiddes sent in the long pass from the left side into a perfect position in the box as Coffee was the sceond man on the attack and easily headed it past the netminder.
Standford would answer right back three minutes later. After a foul by the Huskies, the Cardinal sent a ball into the box where Sam Werner got the ball just ahead of Kerawala, heading it back to Foster Langsdorf. Langsdorf would tap it into the open goal as Werner crashed into Kerawala, taking him out of the play.
Despite the frantic pace of the first 13 minutes, neither team would find the back of the net the rest of the way.
Washington played well throughout the contest and outshot Stanford 15-13 including a 10-7 edge in the opening period. One of those chances for the Huskies came in the 23rd minute as another great cross in the box was met by Corban Anderson, who got a head on it but just missed getting it inside the far post.
In the 34th minute, Handwalla Bwana made a great run, beat a defender and fired off a low shot, but Stanford netminder Nico Corti made a great diving save.
In the second half, Washington continued to put the pressure on. The Huskies had a great chance in the 61st minute, earning a free kick from just outside the box. However, the kick by Bwana sent the shot just high.
Stanford would get a huge break in the 72nd minute as Kerawala took down Foster Langsdorf on a breakaway, receiving a red card and putting the Huskies down a man the rest of the way. Bryce Logan came on in goal and helped keep Washington down just one goal, making two great saves just moments after entering the match.
Despite being down a man, the Huskies kept up the pressure late. With just two minutes left on the clock, Blake Bodily received a nice pass inside the box and cracked a shot. But Corti made an incredible save off the deflection to keep it out. Bodily would have one more crack from the top of the box, but it was blocked by a Stanford defender.
"If we could have first couple minutes of the game back, we would," said head coach Jamie Clark. "We were very good tonight and even with 10 men I still thought we were the better team today. But the better team doesn't always win. The margins were close but we couldn't quite pick that last goal up."
The loss drops the Huskies to 9-5-1 on the season and to 2-3-1 in Pac-12 play. Stanford remains atop the Pac-12 table with a 5-0-1 record. The Huskies have been the only team to score a goal against the Cardinal in conference play, recording one in each match between two, playing to a 1-1 draw at Stanford last week.
The Huskies play their final regular season home game on Sunday, hosting No. 17 California at 5:00 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium.
