Washington Scores Three Late Goals to Down Cal on Senior Night
October 22, 2017 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Washington scored three goals over a seven minute stretch late in the match to blow open a close match and take down No. 17 California 3-0 on senior night on Sunday at the Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies pick up a much-needed win to snap a four-match winless streak, improving to 10-5-1 on the season and to 3-3-1 in Pac-12 play. The Golden Bears drop to 9-5-0 and to 4-3-0 in conference action.
Kyle Coffee scored two goals with a goal by Ryan DeGroot sandwiched in between. Two of the goals came with assists by Blake Bodily with another coming off a Joey Parish helper.
Washington got on the board in the 76th minute as Coffee scored his first of the match. Bodily made a great run around a defender and fired a shot which was redirected by Cal netminder Drake Callender. Coffee was right there to head the ball into the open net to give the Huskies an early lead.
Just three minutes later, UW got a chance off a corner kick. Bodily sent the corner toward te far post. Callendar came off his line and tried to punch the ball away but it went up and back toward the net where DeGroot rushed on and headed it into the goal.
But the Huskies weren't quite finished. Ryan Parish made a fantastic run down the near side, beating a pair of defenders and moving toward goal. He then sent a low cross through the goal mouth past two defenders and the netminder where Coffee tapped it in.
Neither team managed to find the back of the net in a frantic first half. In the 21st minute, UW had its best chance as Beau Blanchard made a great run down the left side and sent a low cross into the box. Coffee took a quick shot but it was saved. The rebound came right back to him and he took another shot but that one was blocked by a Cal defender. The ball rolled back up to the top of the box where John Magnus cracked another low shot which was blocked and cleared from danger.
California had a number of chances in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net. One of them came in the 52nd minute as the Golden Bears got a turnover and turned it into a breakaway. Jose Carerra-Garica came down the near side and looked to have a 1v1 with Washington goalie Bryce Logan. However, Joey Parish seemingly came out of nowhere to slide across and knock the ball away.
Washington out-shot the Golden Bears 11-3 through the first 45 minutes, putting three on goal but not getting any past Callender. For the match the Huskies held a 19-15 edge including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The three goal explosion was the most scored by the Huskies since a 3-0 win over San Diego State on October 5.
"We've been knocking on the door and sometimes things don't go your way and when they do: it rains, it pours," said Head Coach Jamie Clark.
Coffee's brace gives him four goals for the season--one that has been slowed by injury. The senior has started the last two matches but appeared in just 10 overall. Since his reutrn to regular action, he has tallied four of Washington's last eight goals overall.
"Kyle feels like he is coming back into form," said Clark. "If you said we'd have 10 wins with him injured most of the way, I'd say 'no way' because he is so important to us. If he can be healthy down the stretch, we will be awfully tough."
The victory was especially sweet for Logan who was making his first collegiate start in goal. The sophomore, who was filling in for Saif Kerawala in goal as the normal goalkeeper sat out after receiving a red card in the last match, made two saves in earning his first collegiate cleansheet.
"Bryce was great and gutsy. He had to be nerve-wracked but he made safe decisions," said Clark. "He is one of those guys that everyone in the locker rooms roots for. You always want to say good things happen to good people and it did tonight for him."
