PALO ALTO, Calif. --- Elijah Rice scored a goal in the 21st minute and Washington weathered a late storm by the two-time defending NCAA Champions to earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw with No. 8 Stanford at Cagan Stadium on Thursday night.
The battle for the top spot in the Pac-12 standings lived up to its billing as neither the Huskies (9-3-1, 2-1-1 Pac-12) nor the Cardinal (9-2-1, 3-0-1 Pac-12) allowed the other the upper hand. But at the end of the day, Washington left Palo Alto with a big road point and improves to 6-1-2 at Stanford under head coach Jamie Clark.
After a midfield battle to open the match, Washington put Stanford on its heels for a two minute stretch starting in the 19th minute. The Huskies put a number of crosses into the box only to see them cleared. But the pressure paid off as a ball headed toward the goal by Garrett Jackson was headed by Rice past the diving keeper to the far post for the matches' first goal. The goal was the first Stanford had allowed in four Pac-12 matches.
From that point, the momentum turned to the home side. After a number of chances by the Cardinal, Stanford get the tying goal in the 54th minute as the netminder passed a long ball ahead and found two on-rushing players. Tomas Hilliard-Arce pulled the ball down in a 2v1 break, got Kerawala to dive at him and just touched it over to Drew Skundrich, who tapped it into the open goal.
Stanford controlled possession through much of the rest of the half, and held a 12-3 edge in shots throughout the second period. Despite the number of shots, Washington's defense was able to hold the high-flying Cardinal to the one goal as the teams headed to overtime.
In the first overtime period, Blake Bodily helped create a pair of chances for the Huskies. The first was on a long pass ahead by the freshman which nearly found the feet of Rice, who had gotten behind the defense. However, Stanford goalie Nico Corti came off his line and snuffed out the attack. Just 30 seconds later, Bodily was able to collect a loose ball in the box, turned a fired a shot but right on Corti for the easy save.
Stanford had the lone chance and shot in the second overtime period as fatigue began to set in for both sides. The game would end in a 1-1 draw.
Saif Kerawala came up big in goal for the Huskies, recording five saves including three in the second half and a big one in the first overtime. Corti made four saves in net for Stanford.
Washington returns to action on Sunday, heading across the bay to face off against California at 3:00 p.m. The Golden Bears picked up a 2-0 win over Oregon State earlier Thursday and moved past the Huskies into second place in the Pac-12 standings.
