Huskies Shutout Colorado But Settle For Tie
October 01, 2017 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – The Washington Huskies offense peppered the goal with shots but came away with a 0-0 draw Sunday against the Colorado Buffaloes. Washington had 16 shots in the game but could not find a goal, settling for a tie. The Huskies are 8-3-1 now and 1-1-1 in conference.
Sarah Shimer picked up her seventh shutout in the last eight games, making four saves in the game. Shimer now has 12 career shutouts, just two away from moving to fourth in Husky history.
Washington won the midfield battle early and often to create offense throughout the first half, with its first corner kick coming less than two minutes into the game.
Kimberly Keever was a part of two great chances in the first ten minutes. The senior first maneuver past her defender in the sixth minute to reach a cross with her feet, beating the goalie and going wide of the post as she slid forward at the ball.
At 10', Keever was able to meet a loose ball on the side of the six-yard box as the goalie got there, jarring it loose. Keever was able to flick her foot at it as she fell to push it past the goalie but could not direct it into the net.
A bad header by Colorado under pressure left Shannon Simon with the ball outside the box at 16'. Simon then fired a curving shot around the defender and into the diving goalie from 20 yards out.
With the half winding to a close at 41', Keever started another chance with a long run down the middle of the pitch. Keever burst past two defenders with ease before sending a pass out wide. After waiting for the attackers to get in position, a cross by Amanda Perez bounced around to Anissa Dadkhah for a blocked shot from 15 yards.
The Huskies led in shots 6-4 after 45 minutes, with three corners to Colorado's none.
Shimer made a great one-on-one play at 53' to keep the game scoreless. Colorado managed to find space to the side of goal with no defenders in the way. Shimer used her angles and cut off all but the near post, then easily knocked away the shot with both hands.
Shimer made another great play ten minutes later when a pass ahead left the ball in reach of only Shimer and a Colorado attacker. Shimer beat the attacker to the ball and fell on it, then started a counter with an immediate throw to the wing. That attack would end with Ameera Hussen blasting a hard shot that ricocheted off a defender out of the box.
At 74', Simon curved in an excellent cross off a foul on the right wing. Simon managed to get the ball over the defense and find Keever alone on the left side of the box. Keever got up and got her head on it all alone but the ball was caught and saved.
Simon also had a shot in the dying seconds of regulation that headed for the top corner but was knocked down by the goalie.
Shots were 12-6 after regulation as the Huskies put another six shots up in the second half but could not find a goal.
Another Keever headed highlighted Washington's chances in the first overtime period, this one coming in the 94th minute. Keever could not get much power on the shot and had it knocked away.
Shots were 13-8 after the first OT, favoring Washington.
Jessica Udovich made a long run with the ball at 104', carrying it from deep in the defensive zone to the left wing. Udovich sent in a cross that was blocked, then managed to dribble into the box and fire a shot just high.
That was the best chance of the second OT, with the game ending scoreless.
The Huskies hit the road for their first Pac-12 games away from home this upcoming week with two matches in Oregon. Washington will play Oregon State on Thursday, October 5 at 7:00 pm. The week will end with a Sunday, October 8 game against Oregon at 1:00 pm.
