SEATTLE – After being named team champions at the Husky Nike Invitational this past weekend, the Washington women's soccer team will hit the road for another tournament, as they will play two matches in the Nike Portland Invitational on Friday September 9th and Sunday the 11th.
The tournament will feature four teams playing in four games, with Washington playing on Friday against St. John's at 4:30 p.m., and Sunday at noon against Southern Utah.
The Huskies (4-1) are currently riding a four game winning streak, in which they have scored seven goals while allowing only one against. The UW defense, led by junior goalkeeper Sarah Shimer, has recorded shutouts against Tennessee, Cal Poly and Seattle this season. Junior captain Shannon Simon leads the Huskies in goals (3), points (6) and shots (15) through the first five games of the year, scoring twice this past weekend, against Cal Poly and Seattle. In the backfield, Dominique Bond-Flasza and captain Havana McElvaine have each played all 450 minutes this season and recorded an assist, with junior Bond-Flasza also scoring an early game-winner against Tennessee.
On Friday the Dawgs will face a defensive challenge in St. John's (4-0-2), who has scored seven goals in their last two matches, producing wins at Yale and against Fairfield. Leading the attack for the Red Storm are forwards Shea Connors (one goal, three assists) and Christina Bellero (two goals, two assists), while senior Diana Poulin holds down the goal. Poulin has played in all six matches for St. Johns, allowing one goal and recording ten saves while owning a 0.16 goals against average.
Washington's second match of the tournament will come against Southern Utah (0-3-1) on Sunday. Midfielder Abbie Flandro has led the charge for the Thunderbirds through their first four games, recording an assist on a game-tying score in the 85th minute against UC Riverside, and scoring the first goal of the match against UNLV. In goal, Southern Utah has recently turned to two keepers, with sophomores Kaitlyn Caldera and Destiny Collins each playing at least a half in each of their last two matches.
The two other matches of the Nike Portland Invitational will feature Portland versus Southern Utah on Friday at 7 p.m., and Portland versus St. John's on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
