UW Set To Host Husky Nike Invitational
August 31, 2016 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – Coming off a big win in their home opener this past Sunday, the Washington women's soccer team will look to continue their momentum as they get set to host the Husky Nike Invitational this weekend.
The tournament will feature four teams in total with Cal Poly, Portland and Seattle joining the Huskies, consisting of four matches across three days of play. The first two matches will take place on Friday September 2nd, as Portland and Seattle square off at 4:30 p.m., with Washington taking on Cal Poly at 7 p.m. On Sunday Portland will face Cal Poly at noon, with the fourth and final game taking place on the road as the Huskies make the short trip to play Seattle on Monday at Championship Field Stadium at 7 p.m.
Washington has won two straight matches after dropping their season opener at Portland, defeating Tennessee on the road 1-0 and coming back to defeat No. 13 Santa Clara at home 2-1. Junior defender Dominique Bond-Flasza came up big in each match for the Huskies, scoring the lone goal at Tennessee and assisting Pascale Dumesnil on a game-winner in the 87th minute versus Santa Clara. Goalkeeper Sarah Shimer is also off to a great start as well, recording her second career shutout in only her third career start against the Vols and making numerous terrific plays against Santa Clara to keep the Huskies in the game.
The Huskies will face two of the three visiting teams during the tournament, Cal Poly and Seattle. Friday's matchup versus Cal Poly (3-1) will feature two teams on winning streaks, as all three of their wins this season came after dropping their season opener at California. They are led by sophomore forward Caitlyn Kreutz, who scored a team-high seven goals in her freshman season and currently leads the team this year with two goals and two assists.
On Monday Washington will play their first ever road match during the Husky Nike Invitational, as they travel to Seattle (2-1). After opening their season with a big road win at Texas, they traveled to Idaho for the Boise State Tournament where they defeated the host school before falling to San Jose State. The Redhawks' leading scorer is senior Brie Hooks, who has two goals on six shots including a game-winning penalty kick in the 89th minute against Boise State.
This will be the 16th time Washington has hosted this tournament, owning five team champion titles including last season when they hosted Illinois, Michigan and Portland.
