Ben Davison wins single scull, UW rowers win coxed four to win trip to Rotterdam.
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Six current Washington men's rowers won their events at the USRowing Under-23 Trials at Mercer Lake Wednesday to earn a place at the U-23 World Championships in Rotterdam in August.
A men's four made up entirely of Huskies won its final. That boat was coxed by Rielly Milne (Woodinville, Wash.), with Ezra Carlson (Eureka, Calif.), Arne Landboe (Shoreline, Wash.), Sean Kelly (Princeton, N.J.) and Sam Pettet (Seattle) making up the rest of the crew.
That boat, racing as the Seattle Area Rowing Club, beat a four from the Newell Training Center (Harvard) and the New York Athletic Club. The Husky crew finished in 6:23.87, less than four seconds ahead of the Newell crew (6:27.41).
UW sophomore-to-be Ben Davison won the single sculls with a blistering time of 7:15.76, more than 15 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Davison, who took the 2015-16 school year off to vie for a spot in the 2016 Olympics, will return to campus this fall. He rowed in the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne in May, but his quad sculls crew didn't earn a trip to Brazil. Instead, he'll travel to The Netherlands for the U-23s.
Among the other three scullers in the men's single final was current UW rower John Gangi (Modesto, Calif.).
Also Wednesday, a UW duo of Valerie Vogt (Trout Lake, Wash.) and Bella Chilczuk (Renton, Wash.) rowed in a double sculls semifinal, but finished third and did not advance to the final on Thursday.
Finally, Husky sophomore-to-be Samuel O'Brien (Tampa, Fla.) will race in the lightweight double sculls final Thursday, hoping to earn a trip to the championships.
Lastly, two other Husky women – Sarah Dougherty (Kent, Wash.; a senior in 2016) and Marlee Blue (a freshman from Seattle) – remain in contention for spots in the U.S. Under-23 women's eight, coxless four or quadruple sculls boats, which are selected separately.
