April 24, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Washington scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back as they beat St. Mary's, 6-1, in the second game of a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies' (21-14) pitching staff allowed just two runs total to St. Mary's (22-14) in the two games Saturday. They won game one, 3-1, after dropping the series opener on Friday, 5-3.
In game two on Saturday, the Huskies jumped on St. Mary's starter Anthony Gonsolin for three runs after two outs were recorded in the first inning to grab the quick advantage. Chris Baker started the two-out rally with a walk, MJ Hubbs followed with a single and Joey Morgan walked to load the bases. John Naff was hit by a pitch to force in the first run of the game and freshman catcher Willie MacIver followed with a two-RBI single to make the score 3-0.
The Huskies loaded the bases again in the second inning, but were only able to get one run on a RBI single by Baker. Graffanino led off the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a single by Jack Meggs and came in to score on Baker's hit – his third RBI of the double header.
Washington scored an unearned run in the fourth to increase its lead to 5-0. KJ Brady was on second after a single and sacrifice bunt when Hubbs hit the ball off the end of his bat that landed in no-man's land between the pitcher and first baseman. Hubbs beat a diving Gonsolin to the bag, and Brady raced home from third when the ball trickled out of Gonsolin's glove and rolled towards the Huskies' dugout.
The Gaels finally got on the board in the fifth inning, scoring a run on a groundout by catcher Nate Nolan, to make the score 5-1. But, that would be the only offense for the Gaels, who came into the game as the WCC leaders.
The Huskies got the run back in the seventh inning on a RBI double by Naff to increase their lead back to five runs, 6-1. Baker singled, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Naff's double.
Will Ballowe (2-0) allowed one hit over three innings to pick up the win. Lance Berringer pitched the final two innings.
Ryan Schmitten started for the Huskies, but did not figure in the decision. He threw four strong innings, allowing one run on four hits.
The Huskies outhit the Gaels 11-5 in game two and had 17 total hits in the sweep.
Baker was 2 for 3 with a RBI in game two and had three hits total (3 for 7, HR, 3 RBI) in the doubleheader. He has five hits so far in the three-game series.
The Huskies, who entered the day tied for first atop the Pac-12 standings, and Gaels wrap up the series Sunday at Husky Ballpark. The game is slated to start at 12 p.m., which is an hour earlier than originally scheduled.
