Seattle U Holds Of Huskies, 3-2
April 20, 2016 | Baseball
BELLEVUE, Wash. – The Husky Baseball team pounded out 10 hits Tuesday night at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, Wash., but Seattle University staved off several rally attempts by Washington for a 3-2 non-league win.
Washington (19-13) had the tying run in scoring position in each of the final three innings, but Seattle U (23-12) was able to wiggle out of jams each time to keep a lead, which they grabbed right out of the gate.
The Redhawks got off to a fast start, scoring a run in the first and second innings.
In the first, lead-off hitter Griffin Andreychuk took the first pitch he saw from UW starter Channing Nesbitt (1-1) deep over the left-field fence for his first home run of the season and a quick 1-0 lead. The Redhawks made the score 2-0 in the second when left fielder Jake Taylor doubled home Jack Reisinger, who singled to start the inning.
The Huskies got on the board in the fifth when second baseman Levi Jordan hit a RBI single to score freshman catcher Willie MacIver. MacIver reached on a one-out single and alertly took second base when the right fielder Jeffrey Morgan misplayed the ball. Jordan singled on the next pitch to make cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Redhawks answered in the bottom of the fifth with a run to extend their lead back to two, 3-1. Dalton Hurd scored from second with two outs on a clutch base hit by Michael McCann.
But, Washington answered right back in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Chris Baker that again made the deficit just one run at 3-2.
That would be all the offense for either team as both bullpens pitched strong.
Lance Berringer allowed a run in three innings of relief and Will Ballowe threw 3 1/3 strong innings, striking out four, for the Huskies.
Seattle U starter Jake Prizina allowed two runs – one earned – over five innings to pick up his first win of the season. Nick Meservey recorded the final two outs in the ninth for his first save.
Jack Meggs (2 for 5), MacIver (2 for 4) and Jordan (2 for 3, RBI) each had multi-hits for the Huskies.
The Huskies beat the Redhawks, 12-4, last Tuesday, so the yearly series is tied 1-1 with the deciding game being played next Tuesday, April 26 at Husky Ballpark. That game will start at 5:00 p.m. and will be aired on the Pac-12 Network.
The Huskies are back in action on this weekend with a four-game series against St. Mary's at Husky Ballpark. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
