ASU Rallies To Tie Up Series
April 10, 2016 | Baseball
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Colby Woodmansee hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the seventh inning to turn a one-run deficit into a 5-4 lead and Arizona State scored two more runs on a David Greer home run to complete a come-from-behind 6-3 victory over visiting Washington Saturday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Woodmansee's homer erased a nice performance from Husky starter Joe DeMers (2-2) and a 2 for 4, 2 RBI game by UW first baseman John Naff.
The loss dropped the Huskies to 15-11 on the season, 6-5 in Pac-12 play and allowed Arizona State (17-11, 4-7) to even the three-game series at a game apiece.
The Huskies played small ball in the second and fourth innings to score a run in each inning and take a 2-0 lead. MJ Hubbs, the local product from Cave Creek, Ariz., walked to lead off the second, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a passed ball and came around to score on a Naff ground out.
In the fourth, Hubbs once again walked, took second and third on separate wild pitches by ASU starter Eder Erives and came around to score on a two-out single through the hole on the right side by Naff.
Arizona State answered back in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together three-consecutive singles to get on the board. Catcher Brian Serven drove in Woodmansee on a sharp single to left field to make the score 2-1.
The Sun Devils tied it up, 2-2, an inning later in the fifth, this time on a two-out single by Woodmansee that scored Gage Canning from third.
The Huskies would take the lead back in the seventh inning, with Naff again sparking the run production. He doubled to lead off the inning, was safe at third on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a fielder's choice ground out by AJ Graffanino.
Again, the Sun Devils had a response. After a lead-off single by David Greer, Woodmansee connected on a 1-0 pitch from DeMers for a go-ahead, two-run homer. The junior shortstop's fourth home run of the season sent DeMers to the showers and saddled him with his second loss this season. Woodmansee finished the game 3 for 5 with 3 RBI's.
DeMers threw 83 pitches in six innings of work, gave up four earned runs and a season-high 12 hits.
Greer hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning off Spencer Jones to ice the game for the Sun Devils.
ASU's starter Erives earned the win to move to 4-0 on the season. He struck out nine in seven innings, allowing five Husky hits.
Naff and Jack Meggs (2 for 4) each had two of Washington's six hits.
The Huskies and Sun Devils wrap up the series Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
