Huskies Fall 8-6 In 11 Innings To Gonzaga
March 29, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Gonzaga first baseman Taylor Jones hit a two-run triple in the 11th inning to send the Bulldogs to an 8-6 win over Washington Monday night at Husky Ballpark.
The Bulldogs (13-9) rallied from deficits three times, including a 6-4 hole heading into the eighth inning, to take game one of a two-game series over the Huskies (12-8).
Jones hit a 2-1 pitch from UW's fourth pitcher of the night, Alex Nesbitt (2-2), into the right-center gap to send home Jimmy Sinatro and Jarod Gonzales.
Bulldogs' reliever Wyatt Mills (1-1) allowed just two hits in four innings of relief to pick up the win.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead on Gonzaga starter Gage Burland in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Left fielder KJ Brady walked to lead off, advanced to second on a passed ball and was sacrificed to third by Jack Meggs. First baseman John Naff sent Brady home on a ground ball to first to pick up his eighth RBI of the season.
The lead was short-lived for the Huskies as the Bulldogs answered with a pair of runs in the top of the second to take the 2-1 lead. Catcher Joey Harris and center fielder Branson Trube each drove in a run with RBI singles.
UW responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to re-take the lead, 3-2. Burland balked home MJ Hubbs with the bases loaded and Levi Jordan drove home Gage Matuszak on a groundout.
Gonzaga tied it back up, 3-3, scoring after the lead-off runner reached via a walk. Gonzales walked, advanced on a wild pitch and moved up 90-feet on a groundout. He then scored on a groundout by Justin Jacobs.
The score remained tied until Matuszak took Borland deep to left-center field for a two-run home run and 5-3 lead. Matuszak lofted Borland's 3-1 pitch – with Hubbs on board after a single – over the wall for his third homer of the season.
The Bulldogs creeped back to within a run in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Gonzales and Jones, but the Huskies duplicated the feat in the sixth when Matuszak and Chris Baker doubled back-to-back to increase the lead back to two runs, 6-4.
Still trailing in the eighth, Gonzaga tied things back up, 6-6, when left fielder Tyler Frost tripled off Greg Minier with two runners on base. He took a two-out, 3-2 pitch off the wall in right field for his 24th and 25th RBI's of the season.
The Huskies mustered just two base hit over the final five innings and were outhit, 12-9, by Gonzaga.
Matuszak (3 for 5, HR, 2B, 2 RBI, 3 runs) and Baker (2 for 5, 2B) were the only UW batters with multiple hits in the game.
UW and Gonzaga wrap up the short two-game series tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. PT. Hotdogs are just $1 all night at Husky Ballpark.
