Washington Falls To SDSU In Final Seconds
November 06, 2016 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE, WASH. -- The University of Washington men's soccer team fell to the SDSU Aztecs, 1-0, in a heated match Sunday evening. The loss marked the Huskies' (13-5-0) first loss in one month, their last loss came from Stanford on Oct. 6.
"We certainly did enough to win tonight," said Washington head coach Jamie Clark. "But it's a game of moments, and credit to them (SDSU) for making the most of their chances. Looking ahead, the games in the NCAA Tournament are decided by individual moments, so hopefully we start capitalizing on those moments again and get ourselves back on a good run."
SDSU's goal that allowed them to capture the win came in the final ten seconds of the match. Redshirt freshman, Pablo Palaez, took a free kick after a Husky fould that found itself inside the right corner of the net.
The Huskies outshot the Aztecs 16-7 but were unable to convert those opportunities. The team saw shots from Luke Hausewirth, Justin Schmidt, Danny Gavin, Henry Wingo, Justin Fiddes, Mason Robertson, Elijah Rice and Kyle Coffee.
Goalkeeper Auden Schilder had two saves during the match, keeping the opponent off the board until the free kick in the final minute of play.
The tense match featured a combined 32 fouls, 14 for the Aztecs and 18 for the Dawgs, and four yellow cards for each.
Washington will conclude its regular season slate on Thursday, Nov. 10, when they host the Oregon State Beavers at 6 p.m. PT. The match will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network.
