ATLANTA, Ga. - Duke beat defending national champion Washington, 3-1-1, in Wednesday's match play finals to win the championship of the East Lake Cup at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. Sophomore Wehyung Keh won her match versus the Blue Devils' Ana Belac by a margin of 2 up, but it was the only head-to-head match that the Huskies would win.
A day after beating No. 1 seed Stanford, 4-1, the Huskies could not find the same magic from Tuesday. Against the third-seeded Blue Devils, the Huskies fell behind early in four of the five matches and could never recover.
Freshman Ellen Takada dropped her match to defending NCAA Individual Champion, Virginia Elena Carta, to give Duke a quick 1-0 lead. Trailing 1-0, the Huskies started to show some signs of life and tried to rally back into the match.
Freshman Eunwon Park rallied from a 2-hole defecit to square her match up against Lisa Maguire, but on the 18th hole she missed the green and bogeyed while Maguire scored par to win the match 1 up and give Duke the 2-0 lead.
The Blue Devils would clinch the match when Sandy Choi expanded a two-hole lead through 13 holes over sophomore Sarah Rhee with birdies on 14 and 15 to take a 4&3 victory.
Keh was 2 up with four holes left to play over Belac when Duke clinched the decisive match. She led her match by four after 10 holes.
Sophomore Julianne Alvarez was all square with Leona Maguire with two holes remaining when the match was clinched. Neither golfer held more than a 1 up lead throughout the match.
The event in Atlanta was the Huskies' final tournament of the fall. UW will open the 2017 spring season Feb. 12-14 at the Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.
