Huskies Advance to Finals at East Lake Cup with 4 & 1 Win Over Stanford
November 01, 2016 | Women's Golf
ATLANTA, Ga. – The reigning national championship University of Washington women's golf team fell right back into its match play flow as it defeated No. 1 seed Stanford 4 & 1 Tuesday at the second annual East Lake Cup. The Huskies, who were the No. 4 seed, will take on Duke in Wednesday's final match.
"I am so proud of how this team battled today," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "They finally settled in and I think we saw them get some of their confidence back. I think everyone just came out and played with a level of freedom that we haven't had this fall which was very promising to see."
Washington is no stranger to match play as it earned the national title last season playing in the format and they clearly know how to keep it exciting as three of the five in the lineup carded eagles during the day. UW was fourth following the individual stroke play round on Monday and had finished 34 strokes behind the Cardinal who earned the top seed.
The Dawgs earned victories from sophomores Julianne Alvarez, Sarah Rhee and Wenyung Keh who are now a combined 10-2 when it comes to match play. Freshman Ellen Takada also took her match to give the Dawgs the 4-1 win while freshman Eun Won Park notched UW's lone loss.
Rhee and Keh both recorded 5 & 4 victories in their matches over Albane Valenzuela and Shannon Aubert, respectively. Rhee took over in the back nine as she jumped out to a commanding five-up lead early after the turn that she never relinquished.
Keh's round was similar as she went up after her third hole and stayed ahead en route to her victory, which also featured a highlight shot on her last hole where she eagled from 55 yards out.
"Wenyung just played flawlessly today," said Mulflur. "She was so good in all aspects of her game, from ball striking to putting, she just really executed everything very well today and stayed very calm."
The tournament, which features the top four returning teams from last year's national championship, wraps up Wednesday with national television coverage starting at 12 p.m. PT on the Golf Channel.
